World of Warcraft has undergone stat squishes to prevent number bloat and keep damage and health numbers manageable.
The Frozen Bonespike, an ancient dagger that was once formidable, now decreases Critical Strike as a result of a stat reduction. Similar items with stat penalties existed in the early version of WoW, but they have been removed since then. However, players can still come across such items in WoW Classic.
While clearing out their bank, a World of Warcraft player recently stumbled upon a peculiar item that imposes a penalty on a particular stat. This anomaly on the outdated piece of equipment was most likely a consequence of one of World of Warcraft's previous stat adjustments.
With a history spanning close to 20 years, World of Warcraft's linear level progression has presented challenges in the past. To prevent excessive numerical inflation, the game has undergone two stat adjustments thus far: one during Warlords of Draenor and another following the Shadowlands level reduction. These adjustments have successfully prevented damage and health numbers from reaching excessively astronomical figures.
The stat squish in World of Warcraft has resulted in some unexpected changes to old gear and content. SpearLT300, a fan and Reddit user, came across a Frozen Bonespike dagger while cleaning out their bank. This dagger, originally a powerful item that increased Critical Strike, now actually decreases Critical Strike when equipped.
Interestingly, this is not the first time items in World of Warcraft have had stat penalties. In the early days of the game, items like the Ogremage Staff and the Cloak of Rot reduced a character's Intellect and Stamina. While some of these items can still be obtained in the current version of the game, their stat penalties have been removed.
It is highly likely that this specific decrease in stats is a result of the stat squishes that occurred in World of Warcraft's history. Some fans speculated that the reason the item had these stats was because it was the Heroic version of the weapon, which included a gem socket. The Frozen Bonespike probably received a penalty to a stat due to its low item level, as WoW's system needed to ensure that the item didn't surpass its limited bonus budget while considering the gem slot.
Regardless, fans thoroughly enjoyed this particular item in World of Warcraft. It reminded them of cursed magical items in games like Dungeons and Dragons and other classic RPGs, sparking nostalgia for these delightful little details from the early days of Vanilla WoW.
Fortunately, players in World of Warcraft Classic have the opportunity to gather items with negative stat bonuses for their own use. However, caution must be exercised when equipping these penalty-imposing items on a one-life character, as Hardcore Realms will soon be introduced to Classic Era WoW servers. World of Warcraft is currently accessible on PC.
