My Hero Academia Season 6 kicked off in the fall of 2022, with the second cour stretching into the first quarter of 2023. This season delves into an exhilarating arc, featuring some of the most intense showdowns and action sequences in the series.

The fandom was buzzing with excitement and high expectations, particularly among manga readers who knew the intensity of the storyline to come. Even anime-only viewers were eagerly awaiting the major battle hinted at in the conclusion of season 5.

Despite the eager anticipation, the season didn't quite live up to the pre-release hype. It should be mentioned that it wasn't bad at all - in fact, it was one of the best seasons to date. However, while season 6 maintained quality, it didn't fully capture the complexities of the source material as some fans had hoped, leading to criticism and disappointment.

2. Spy x Family Season 2

Spy x Family won over anime fans with the adorable Anya Forger and an engaging story. However, the second season shifted the focus more towards Yor and her missions, leaving fans waiting until episode 10 for more bonding moments with the family. Despite Yor's action-packed storylines, Loid's presence was lacking, and the season felt like it had filler content.

3. Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions (Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri)

Spy x Family continues to bring joy and humor, never failing to uplift the spirits. Although the second season may have fallen short, this 2023 anime still offers a delightful experience.

The premiere of this 2023 anime caused a stir of excitement. The plot follows Totomaru Isshiki, an earnest yet naive detective, who seeks the help of the renowned former detective, Ron Kamonohashi, to solve perplexing cases. However, Kamonohashi is prohibited from participating in investigative work. The enigma surrounding Kamonohashi and the overall storyline appeared captivating based on previews.

4. Tokyo Revengers Season 3

Based on the manga by Akira Amano, the character designer of Psycho Pass, this upcoming anime for fall 2023 features a captivating ensemble of well-crafted characters that initially add to the charm of the story. However, post-release, the series struggles to maintain its allure due to weak storytelling and evident plot inconsistencies.

Season 3 of Tokyo Revengers has been one of the most eagerly awaited releases this year. The storyline takes a deep dive into the Tenjiku Arc, showcasing intense battles and action-packed sequences, with a strong emphasis on Mikey, also known as Manjiro Sano, and Izana Kurokawa.

The show's plot is charming, but the narrative is somewhat overrated. The constant gang wars and time-traveling adventures of the main character, Takemichi Hanagaki, become monotonous and lose their appeal over time. This is also true for the 2023 anime installment, making it one of the overhyped anime releases this year.

5. Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead

Uncovering the Truth: The Surprisingly Great and Disappointingly Overhyped Anime of 2023

The newly released seinen series of 2023 quickly became popular for its engrossing storyline, offering a fresh perspective on the post-apocalyptic zombie survival genre. However, despite its unique plot, high-quality art, and lighthearted elements, this 2023 anime falls short.

The protagonist, Akira Tendou, takes pleasure in the zombie apocalypse for what seems like a trivial reason – the escape from his exploitative job. Instead of seeking new employment or quitting, his extreme happiness amidst the world's crisis and suffering seems out of proportion.

These issues contribute to Zom 100 being one of the overhyped 2023 anime.

6. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2

Mushoku Tensei has garnered significant attention as a prominent isekai anime. Following its initial release, the series quickly gained widespread acclaim, generating considerable anticipation among viewers for its upcoming second season. Regrettably, the storyline of the 2023 installment failed to meet fan expectations.

The story centers on Rudeus' inner turmoil and his determination to move past Eris' sudden departure, exploring his battle with emotional turmoil. While the show still has its special appeal and showcases touching interactions between Rudy and Sylphiette, the excitement of his previous adventures seems to be missing in this 2023 anime as he adjusts to life at Ranoa University of Magic.

In this debut 2023 anime, the harem genre is taken to new heights as the protagonist, Rentarou Aijou, navigates an overwhelming number of admirers, leading to an extensive harem.

The narrative begins with Rentarou, who is blessed by the god of matchmaking, coming across a grand total of 100 soulmates, mirroring the number of rejections he had experienced in the past.

8. Rent a Girlfriend Season 3 (Kanojo, Okarishimasu season 3)

The series not only showcases a large number of harem girls but also excessively sexualizes its characters. Overall, this 2023 anime goes overboard with harem tropes, garnering more attention than it may warrant.

Debuting in 2020, this plot showcased a new outlook on the romantic comedy category, depicting the unorthodox connection between a lovelorn lead, Kazuya Kinoshita, and his hired girlfriend, Chizuru Mizuhara.

9. Undead Unluck

Despite the mix of intriguing, comical, and emotional elements in the plot, it still contains some basic plot holes that continue into season 3, which was released this year and focuses on Chizuru’s amateur film and its production. However, the 2023 anime season falls short of expectations, as the lackluster narrative fails to capture the same allure as the debut season.

The main character, Fuuko Izumo, grapples with a peculiar condition that results in the death of anyone she comes into contact with, leading to the untimely demise of several individuals, including her own parents. Faced with the overwhelming burden of her unfortunate ability, Fuuko makes a drastic decision to end her own life.

Accidentally brushing against a stranger during her attempt, Fuuko realizes that the man, Andy, is immortal and is also searching for a way to end his life. This marks the start of their unusual journey to find a suitable conclusion for him. Despite its unique plot and adaptation from a fairly popular manga, the anime struggled to gain widespread attention upon its release.

10. Hell's Paradise (Jigokuraku)

The 2023 anime has captured the hearts of anime fans with its captivating plot. Transporting viewers to ancient Japan, the series chronicles the extraordinary escapades of ninja Gabimaru the Hollow.

Under the urging of his executioner, Sagiri Yamada Asaemon, Gabimaru sets out on a journey to the island of Shinsekyo in search of the elixir of immortality. His goal is to secure a pardon for his crimes and leave behind his violent past to live a peaceful life with his wife.

Despite its initial excitement, this shonen series has faced significant criticism. Some fans have expressed disappointment with the perceived decline in animation quality. There has also been negative feedback about the adaptation, with claims that the anime does not live up to the excellence of Mangaka Yūji Kaku’s original creation.

The Apothecary Diaries, making its debut this year, showcases a distinctive storyline that sets it apart from the typical action and adventure series. Based on the Japanese light novel of the same name, written by Natsu Hyūga and illustrated by Touko Shino, the anime is set in a fictional ancient China.

The Apothecary Diaries centers on Maomao, a protagonist with deep knowledge of medicine and a fascination with poisons, leading to unexpected twists after she is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Despite its unique plot, captivating characters, and impressive artwork, the anime has not received the recognition it deserves, making it an underrated gem of 2023 anime.

2. The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3 (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari Season 3)

The underwhelming reception of The Rising of the Shield Hero's second season has cast a shadow over its third season. Season 1 (2019) gained immense popularity, establishing itself as one of the most anticipated isekai anime within the community.

Unfortunately, the second season failed to meet expectations, drawing criticism for its filler-heavy plot, animation quality, and use of CGI for the tortoise. As a result, some fans lost interest in the show. This had a negative impact on the third season, leading to a lack of excitement among viewers following its release this year.

3. The Dangers in My Heart (Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu)

Season 3 has defied expectations despite its initial lukewarm reception. The 2023 anime installment boasts a captivating storyline, enhanced production values, and significant character growth for supporting figures such as the Spear Hero and Bow Hero. However, it continues to struggle in recapturing its former popularity, placing it among the underrated 2023 anime releases.

An overlooked gem in the 2023 anime lineup is a new romance series with a captivating storyline. Taking place in a fantasy historical setting, this shojo adaptation of a light novel by Akumi Agitogi, featuring illustrations by Tsukiho Tsukioka, shares similarities with the classic Cinderella tale.

The story chronicles Saimori Miyo's transformation from a mistreated young girl in her own family to an unwilling bride of the seemingly heartless commander, Kudou Kiyoka. Despite the challenging circumstances, a glimmer of hope emerges as Miyo's life takes an unexpected turn for the better after her marriage.

Despite its stunning visuals, intriguing plot, and emotional elements, this summer 2023 anime continues to be an underappreciated treasure that graced the screens this year.

This year's debut of the sports genre series caused a sensation in the anime world. Prior to its release, the 2023 anime didn't generate much hype, with only manga readers aware of its intense storyline. However, as the anime aired, a wider audience experienced the excitement, finally giving it the attention it deserved.

The plot centers around Yoichi Isagi, an up-and-coming striker, and his teammates as they face obstacles at Blue Lock, a facility dedicated to developing the world's top striker and boosting Japanese soccer. Although it has gained some notoriety since season 1, it has not achieved the same level of success as beloved genre classics such as Haikyuu, Kuroko no Basket, Yuri!!! on Ice, and Free!.

7. Oshi no Ko

Oshi no Ko, a 2023 anime debut, has defied all expectations since its release. While the show's controversial plot incorporates sensitive topics and triggering elements, as well as the portrayal of real-world issues, it undeniably offers an intriguing and unique exploration of idol culture, the entertainment industry, and the lives of entertainers.

The adaptation of Aka Akasaka’s manga with illustrations by Mengo Yokoyari, this seinen show stands out for its exceptional storytelling, complemented by visually stunning art and animation. It has become a standout series, offering a truly unique viewing experience. However, it did not manage to garner the traction that one might have expected.

8. Buddy Daddies

Despite its similarities to the popular series Spy x Family, this original 2023 anime may have flown under the radar. However, this debut series has its own unique charm and plenty of distinguishing features.

Buddy Daddies follows the lively adventures of four-year-old Miri Unasaka, who is being raised by professional assassins Kazuki Kurusu and Rei Suwa in unusual circumstances. The show blends action and comedy in an entertaining narrative.

Although the anime only ran for one season and provided a satisfying conclusion without leaving any loose ends, it remains an enjoyable watch that deserves more recognition than it gets.

9. Skip and Loafer

Uncovering the Truth: The Surprisingly Great and Disappointingly Overhyped Anime of 2023

The spring 2023 anime is a delightful pick-me-up with Mitsumi Iwakura at its heart. This high school girl with big dreams moves from the countryside to Tokyo for a better education, but struggles to adapt to city life. From getting lost in the hustle and bustle to dealing with anthropophobia, Mitsumi faces challenges. However, everything changes when she meets Sousuke Shima, a classmate who offers his friendship and support.

The narrative delves into the daily routines of this duo and their peers, presenting a mix of entertaining and touching scenes. However, despite its charming storyline, this inaugural anime is still not receiving the recognition it deserves.

10. Heavenly Delusion (Tengoku Daimakyou)

Set in a dystopian universe, this 2023 anime provides a truly immersive journey with its compelling storyline. While drawing parallels to series like The Promised Neverland and Darling in the Franxx, this show delves into even darker and more unsettling themes, tackling issues of human testing, entrapped children, assault, and suicide.

This mystery-laden seinen show follows the adventurous journey of protagonists Kiruko and Maru in a world teeming with man-eating monsters. The intriguing elements of this debut series make it deserving of much more hype than it is currently receiving.

In addition to this new series, the 2023 anime lineup includes other all-time favorites such as One Piece, Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, and Jujutsu Kaisen. Despite the immense hype surrounding their release, these big titles successfully met or even surpassed expectations, landing them neither in the overhyped nor understated gems category for 2023.

Editor's P/S

As a hard fan of anime, I have mixed feelings about the 2023 anime lineup. On the one hand, I am thrilled with the return of some of my favorite series, such as Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen. These shows have consistently delivered high-quality storytelling and animation, and I can't wait to see what they have in store for us this year. On the other hand, I am disappointed with some of the other highly anticipated titles, such as My Hero Academia Season 6 and Spy x Family Season 2. While these shows are still enjoyable, they didn't quite live up to my expectations.

Overall, I think the 2023 anime lineup has been a bit of a mixed bag. There have been some great shows, but also some disappointing ones. However, I am still optimistic about the rest of the year, and I am looking forward to seeing what new and exciting anime series are released.
