In episode 7 of Ahsoka, titled "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness," New Republic Senator Hamato Xiono questions General Hera Syndulla's claims about Grand Admiral Thrawn's imminent return. Senator Xiono expresses skepticism not only towards the Jedi, but also the star whales known as purrgil and the idea of traveling to distant galaxies. However, one would expect a senator, especially one who has interacted with individuals like Leia Organa, to possess some knowledge about the Jedi and their identity.
Ahsoka's Senator Xiono Dismisses The Jedi As "Fairy Tales" - Why?
In front of the New Republic Senate Committee, as Hera Syndulla defends herself, Senator Xiono questions the credibility of the report. He finds the mention of Jedi, false Jedi, star maps, star whales, and distant galaxies to be reminiscent of a child's fairy tale. Given the youth and vulnerability of the New Republic, it is understandable that Xiono struggles to believe in the rising threat of the Imperial Remnant, relying instead on a group of individuals scattered across the galaxy who were thought to be extinct just a few years ago. It is difficult for him to accept this reality, even when working closely with Luke Skywalker's sister. Although Luke is undoubtedly a hero, his acts of bravery during the Return of the Jedi were witnessed by only a few individuals. The truth of his actions was limited to those he confronted, such as Vader and Palpatine. Leia, being a Senator, also had reasons to conceal the truth about her father. Additionally, other Jedi like Kanan, Ezra, and Ahsoka disappeared from sight before the war's end. Ahsoka was believed to have died, Kanan sacrificed his life, and Ezra banished Thrawn to another galaxy. Considering these circumstances, it is not unreasonable for Xiono to doubt the validity of these fantastical stories about unfamiliar individuals.
Senator Xiono Shows Why The New Republic Failed
Senator Xiono's firm denial of the Jedi's existence and the events in the Ahsoka show exemplifies the flaws of the New Republic's burgeoning government. Disregarding firsthand accounts and refusing to acknowledge the truth proved detrimental, leading to the downfall of the New Republic. Others followed suit, resulting in inaction despite the growing threat of the First Order. Shunning the Jedi's presence allowed Xiono to dismiss the Imperial Remnant and the First Order as mere legends. Consequently, his disbelief and inaction set off a chain reaction, prompting Leia to establish a secret Resistance and ultimately leading to the destruction of the entire New Republic on Hosnian Prime. Senator Xiono's role in Ahsoka unquestionably foreshadows the impending turmoil in the galaxy.
