Xbox took to the stage with a lot riding on its shoulders, hoping to remind fans why they fell in love with the brand in the first place. And they certainly delivered. While the in-depth look at Starfield won over the skeptics, it was the sheer volume of quality announcements that truly impressed at the Xbox Showcase. Among the standout titles was Towerborne, an action RPG with co-op play and a stunning cel-shaded art style from Banner Saga series developer, Stoic Studio. Though rumors of the game have circulated for years, this was the first official announcement, and fans can't wait to see more.

According to industry insiders, Codename Belfry is an upcoming Xbox exclusive from Stoic Studio, which will feature a side-scrolling action game style instead of the top-down tactical RPG seen in their previous title Banner Saga. However, RPG elements such as gear forging and upgrading will still be present, with a central base location named after the game itself. Additionally, the game will maintain the hand-drawn art style seen in Banner Saga, but with a Ghibli-esque look inspired by the film Princess Mononoke.

The highly anticipated Stoic Studio project, now revealed as Towerborne, has confirmed many of the rumors previously circulating online. The game's central hub, "The Belfry," will serve as a crafting and upgrading area for players after their missions. Towerborne will feature a side-scrolling action gameplay style, with a focus on collecting loot and leveling up the player's character, as hinted in a previous job listing. The art style of Towerborne appears to be heavily influenced by Ghibli's Princess Mononoke, as seen in the forest mushroom creatures resembling the Kodama tree spirits. While it is yet to be confirmed whether Towerborne is running on Unreal Engine 5, recent reports suggest that it may not be the chosen engine.

Towerborne is set for a 2024 release on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
