The error is one that can be made easily, especially since the series was originally marketed as a potential sequel to the Yellowstone prequel. However, creator Chad Feehan explained to The Wrap his reasoning for moving in a different direction.
Feehan clarified that his involvement in the 1883 connection came after it was initially established. He was given the freedom to link the story to 1883 but was not required to do so. After determining the timeline and location for the story, he chose to focus on the period from 1862 to 1877 and the region where Bass frequently traveled.
He explained that Paramount requested eight episodes, and he believed this format could effectively honor Bass Reeves' legacy. He was also asked about the possibility of exploring other lawmen in the future, to which he expressed enthusiasm for telling more stories in that space. This led to the development of the series as it is today.
The timelines of the two shows do not align, as 1883 is set in the year it is named after, while Lawmen: Bass Reeves' opening events, such as the Battle of Pea Ridge, occur in the 1860s and 1870s, predating the prequel series. Despite this, Lawmen: Bass Reeves is still connected to the Sheridan-verse, with the creator of Yellowstone serving as one of the executive producers.
There is currently no confirmation on whether an iteration of 1883 will continue in the future.
