Houston authorities arrested 52-year-old rapper Lee Carter, also known as Viper, for allegedly kidnapping a pregnant woman and holding her captive in his dilapidated garage for over four years. Despite her numerous escape attempts, he remained in custody until his recent arrest and subsequent charge of aggravated kidnapping as reported by court documents obtained by CNN.
Last April, the Houston police officers were called to Carter's home after a woman sent a text to 911 claiming she was being held against her will, according to a criminal complaint.
Upon arrival, the officers found a makeshift toilet that did not work, a mattress soiled with fresh vomit, as well as diapers, snack chips and Twinkies. The garage, which had a lock on the inside requiring a key to open, was pried open by the officers.
The woman was reported to be wearing dirty, unkempt clothing and looked severely undernourished, weighing only about 70 pounds. According to the complaint, she admitted to not showering for two months and surviving on chips and other snacks. She also stated that she had contacted 911 using a texting app on Carter's laptop.
The woman claimed that the ordeal began when Carter saw her begging for money about four or five years ago in Houston while she was pregnant. She stated that he offered her $1 and asked if she needed help. After accepting his offer, Carter allegedly took her to his house and locked her in his garage, as stated in the complaint.
Carter, 52, is a rapper whose stage name is Viper. He claims he is innocent of the kidnapping charge.

She told police shes since endured years of abuse by Carter, including him forcing her to take illegal drugs and have sex with him, the complaint said.
According to Carter's attorney George Powell, the couple had a consensual relationship and share a 3-year-old child. Powell stated that Carter intends to plead not guilty at his upcoming court hearing in February. He also mentioned that Carter and other witnesses who are familiar with the couple will have plenty of evidence to prove that they have been in a long-term relationship.
Carter has proclaimed his innocence on social media
The artist has dropped several albums and numerous mixtapes, establishing himself as a prominent figure in cloud rap, a subgenre characterized by its hazy production style and laid-back beats. His top track, "Youll Cowards Dont Even Smoke Crack," has amassed 1.6 million streams on Spotify.
Carter was freed on Monday after posting a $100,000 bond and took to social media to proclaim his innocence.
"I am innocent!!! I am no longer in custody!!! I did not commit any of the accusations and I will be completely cleared," he wrote in all caps on Tuesday on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.
The Houston Police Department spokesperson, Jodi Silva, informed CNN that it took nearly nine months for police to arrest Carter, as he was not at home when the woman initially contacted them in April. Although a warrant was filed for his arrest at the time, it took some time to locate him, according to Silva.
At the time she met Carter, it was unclear what happened with the woman's alleged pregnancy. Powell stated that he did not have any information on the pregnancy.
Lee Carter is seen during a court appearance. He's been charged with aggravated kidnapping and will plead not guilty, his attorney said.

Silva, the Houston police spokesperson, said information on the pregnancy is "unknown" at this time as investigators work to piece together details.
Before last April, the woman had reached out to 911 multiple times and had been transported to the hospital, but she never disclosed being abducted or mistreated, according to Silva. After receiving treatment, she was reportedly released into Carter's care on those occasions, she added.
"We would gather her information and ensure she was taken to the hospital, and the paramedics would assist with the transfer, but it seems she would consistently return to him," Silva explained.
The Houston Police is in contact with the woman and she is currently living in an apartment outside the city, Silva said.
The woman says she pleaded with Carter to let her go
The woman informed the police that she spent the majority of her time in the garage, as it did not have a shower. She mentioned that Carter would occasionally take her inside the house to clean up, and during those times she would attempt to escape. However, Carter would grab her and lock her back up in the garage. She also stated that she begged Carter to release her, but he would threaten her with violence.
She once broke a garage window while authorities were at the home and crawled out to get their attention. After being taken to the hospital, she was released to Carter, according to the criminal complaint. Following this incident, Carter allegedly boarded up the windows and told a neighbor that he did so in order to prevent her from escaping.
