In Sons of the Forest, players are thrust into chaos as a part of a rescue team searching for missing civilians on a not-so-deserted island infested with cannibalistic enemies. The ultimate goal is survival, as players must battle against nature and the violent native population.
To stay alive, players must prioritize their basic needs, including energy, hunger, and thirst. These needs naturally deplete over time or through activity, and if they become too low, the health meter decreases. While hunger can be cured by consuming wildlife and plants, finding a reliable water source may prove to be a challenge. Therefore, it is vital to learn how to obtain and store water in Sons of the Forest.
Updated June 28, 2023, by Taylor Pittman: Sons of the Forest has received numerous updates during its early access period, introducing additional features, mechanics, and gameplay elements. Some of these additions have made survival on the secluded island more challenging rather than easier. In Patch 07, a system for dirty and clean water was implemented. As a result, players now need to exert additional effort to obtain clean drinking water to quench their thirst. This article has therefore been revised to provide information on acquiring clean drinking water.
How to Get Water in Sons of the Forest
- How to Obtain Clean Drinking WaterWhen the thirst meter becomes low, a message displaying "You Are Thirsty" will appear at the bottom left corner of the screen. At this point, it is crucial to find a water source. However, not all water sources in Sons of the Forest are safe for consumption, resembling the real world. In fact, all lakes and rivers in the game are contaminated. As a result, players are left with two options: collecting rainwater or boiling dirty water. By doing so, they can prevent any potential harm or damage caused by drinking contaminated water.
How to Use the Water Collector

Frequent rainfall occurs on the island, making it convenient to collect rainwater for drinking purposes. To create a water collector, players are required to assemble sixteen sticks and a turtle shell. Sticks can be gathered from various locations in the forest, with assistance from Kelvin if needed.
Turtles are predominantly found on beaches adjacent to the shores, and players can obtain their shells and meat by using a spear or another weapon to strike them. The Water Collector can hold a maximum of five drinks, although it will evaporate during periods of dry weather, so it is advised to utilize it whenever feasible.
How to Boil Water
In Sons of the Forest, boiling water requires players to locate a river or lake, as well as a Cooking Pot. However, the vast and vibrant forest is unpredictable, making travel and navigation confusing.
Fortunately, players begin their journey equipped with essential tools, including an axe, GPS, and lighter. The GPS proves particularly valuable, offering a detailed map featuring marked paths, changes in terrain, and bodies of water. With the help of the GPS, players can easily locate water sources. Once found, the next task is to locate a Cooking Pot for boiling the water.
A Cooking Pot can be found on the west side of the forest at an abandoned campsite. The steps to boil water are below:
After picking it up, take the Cooking Pot to a water source and fill it up.
Then, build a fire or fire pit and light it using the small lighter from the Emergency Pack.
Equip the Cooking Pot from the inventory and interact with the fire to set the Pot down.
Click on the gear and select Clean Water from the cook menu.
The lid will pop on, and the water will start to boil.
Once it is clean, the pot falls off the fire
Players can then drink the water right then or store it inside a Flask.
How to Store Water
Storing water becomes possible for players when they opt to create a flask through 3D printing. However, this task can prove to be quite challenging due to the concealed whereabouts of the printer. A potential solution lies in discovering the bunker, which can be found in the western part of the island, adjacent to the beach.
To access this location, go to https://mapgenie.io/sons-of-the-forest/maps/world. Once you reach the bottom of a slope, you'll notice a marker near an abandoned golf cart that is now hidden under a thick layer of vines. Navigate through the cave and proceed down the corridor until you spot a beam of light ahead. Follow the light to discover a secure room filled with valuable resources, including a 3D printer. Utilize the printer to create a flask using printer resin. You can replenish the flask at any clean water source or by using a Water Collector.
Sons of the Forest is out in early access on PC.
