Lower Decks Is The Perfect Follow Up To Strange New Worlds
The crossover between Star Trek: Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds in season 2 of Strange New Worlds was highly praised. Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome's portrayal of Brad Boimler and Beckett Mariner brought a fresh comedic element to Strange New Worlds, while Anson Mount and the Strange New Worlds cast embraced the chaotic humor of the Lower Deckers. This crossover also showcased the shared characteristics of both shows, including their episodic nature with serialized character development, their adherence to the best Star Trek traditions, and their success in highlighting a lovable cast of characters.
In addition to the humorous crossover, Strange New Worlds demonstrated its versatility by incorporating animated sequences in which the USS Enterprise crew transformed into cartoons. This further revealed that Strange New Worlds is capable of thriving in an animated format. However, in the 24th century timeline, Mariner and Boimler have returned to the Cerritos and are adjusting to their new positions as Lieutenants, junior grade. Notably, season 4 of Star Trek: Lower Decks will be the last new Star Trek content on Paramount+ in 2023, while the animated series will make a comeback in 2024 with season 5. This will help bridge the gap until the highly anticipated season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is released.
