As the release of Barbie approaches, a recent fan artwork portrays Ryan Gosling's Ken in one of his acclaimed movies, Drive. The fanart cleverly merges the two films, possibly influenced by Barbie's infamous car that she shares with Ken, a detail familiar to the fans. Given Gosling's character's renowned skill in driving, especially in illicit activities, the fusion of the two elements adds a comedic touch.
The Twitter page of Rahal Arts shared a fanart featuring Ryan Gosling's character from the movie Drive. The picture depicts him wearing a pink jacket in front of a pink car, reminiscent of the movie's iconic poster. The caption for the fanart reads, "This Ken is a getaway driver. #RyanGosling #Ken #LiterallyMe #BarbieTheMovie #BarbieWorld #BarbieMovie #Drive."
In the film Drive, Gosling portrays a character known as The Driver, who holds various jobs, many of which revolve around his exceptional driving skills. One of his primary roles is being a stunt driver for Hollywood action movies, as well as serving as the getaway driver for criminal heists. As he becomes romantically involved with a woman whose ex-convict husband is deeply involved in the criminal underworld, The Driver inadvertently becomes more entangled in a dangerous life. His mission becomes protecting his love interest and her infant son from this perilous environment. Drive has received widespread critical acclaim and is often regarded as one of Ryan Gosling's standout roles, a notable achievement considering his impressive filmography (which will soon include an Ocean's Eleven prequel).
The irony of the poster lies in how Drive is considered one of Gosling's more intense performances, whereas Barbie is expected to be one of his more lighthearted roles as an actor since he will be portraying the live-action version of an iconic American toy. The Barbie movie trailer portrays him as a clueless man out of his element, providing an opportunity for Gosling to display his comedic timing, as he has done in previous films such as The Nice Guys. These fanart posters showcase Gosling's versatility as a leading man, as he has taken on diverse roles throughout his rise to fame. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that his characters are never repetitive; he effortlessly transitions from embodying an airheaded toy like Ken to portraying a morally conflicted criminal like The Driver in Drive. When watching his movies, it is evident that Gosling never plays the same character twice, proving his ability to transform and convincingly portray distinct roles. Hence, no one can claim that he simply plays himself in his acting endeavors.
Barbie will be released in theaters on July 21, 2023.
