The Fat Man is a highly enjoyable yet impractical weapon in Fallout 4. It draws loose inspiration from the real-world Davy Crockett nuclear recoilless rifle. This atomic catapult has the ability to deliver a massive 450 points of damage over a wide area, rivaling only the Minutemen artillery barrages in terms of destruction. However, the Fat Man in Fallout 4 also has its limitations and can pose a significant danger to the user if not handled with caution.
One of these limitations is the scarcity of its ammunition, known as Mini Nukes, which is one of the rarest types of ammo in the game. Very few merchants sell them, and they are not commonly found in random loot. In Fallout 4, players will mostly come across Mini Nukes in specific locations scattered throughout the Commonwealth. However, locating some of these can prove to be quite challenging, and it almost seems like Bethesda intentionally designed one of them to be easily overlooked. Surprisingly, many Fallout 4 guides fail to mention its existence altogether.
The Cambridge Police Station Mini Nuke
The Cambridge Police Station holds a significant role in Fallout 4's narrative, particularly as the initial introduction to The Brotherhood of Steel. Positioned along the route between Concord and Diamond City, even those who veer off the main path will likely be lured by Scribe Haylen's distress signal. Avoiding interaction with the Cambridge Police Station during the first stage of Fallout 4 would require a deliberate effort. Surprisingly, despite the station being fully explorable, players may easily overlook a valuable item like the Mini Nuke.
This is due to the fact that the Mini Nuke is not present during the initial visit, nor does it appear during subsequent visits, possibly even up to the third visit. Upon arriving at the Police Station, players are met with a Brotherhood of Steel team under attack by a multitude of Feral Ghouls. It is at this juncture that they encounter Paladin Danse, who seeks assistance in retrieving a piece of pre-war radio equipment from ArcJet Systems. Should players agree to assist, the quest concludes with Danse offering the Sole Survivor his unique laser rifle and extending an invitation to join the Brotherhood of Steel.
In Fallout 4, players will not encounter the Mini Nuke until the second act of the game. After completing the "Reunions" quest and leaving Fort Hagen, they will witness the arrival of the Brotherhood airship Prydwen in The Commonwealth, accompanied by a fleet of Vertibirds. Paladin Danse will then send out a message for all local Brotherhood of Steel personnel to gather at the Cambridge Police Station, initiating the quest Shadow of Steel.
Once at the Police Station, players will accompany Paladin Danse to meet Elder Maxson of The Brotherhood of Steel aboard the Prydwen. Instead of walking, the Sole Survivor will have the opportunity to fly to the Prydwen on a Brotherhood Vertibird that has landed on the roof. While boarding the Vertibird, players should take note of the metal crates. It is on top of a stack of these crates on the western side of the helipad that the Mini Nuke will spawn, but only after completing Shadow of Steel by speaking to Elder Maxson on the Prydwen. Once this task is complete, players can return to the Cambridge Police Station to collect the Mini Nuke.
Many players overlook this Mini Nuke, which is no surprise. It isn't present when the game prompts them to go to the roof, and Fallout 4's Brotherhood of Steel narrative moves away from the Police Station thereafter. While a single Mini Nuke may not have a significant impact on one's gameplay, they are scarce enough for players to be on the lookout for them. Bethesda, in this instance, cleverly concealed a potent weapon in plain view.
Fallout 4 can be played on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
