Taiwanese billionaire Pierre Chen is set to auction his extensive collection of 25,000 wine bottles, with some of the rarest items estimated to sell for a whopping $190,000 per bottle. Sotheby's, the organizing entity behind the five-part sale, anticipates that the collection could reach a staggering total of $50 million, making it the most substantial and priciest wine collection ever auctioned.
George Lacey, Head of Sothebys Wine for Asia, describes Chens wine knowledge as exceptional and his collection as remarkable in terms of quantity and variety. The billionaire, founder and chair of Yageo Corporation, has spent four decades assembling this impressive collection. Lacey acknowledges that the wine in Chen's cellars is more than any individual could consume in a lifetime, but emphasizes that wine is meant to be enjoyed.
The collection includes some of the "most sought-after and iconic vintages" ever produced at the La Tâche vineyard, Sotheby's said.
According to Sotheby's, although they did not disclose the exact size of Chens collection, a spokesperson informed CNN via email that the number of bottles in his cellars exceed 100,000, and the bottles being auctioned are only a small portion of his overall holdings.
Chen is currently ranked as the 10th richest person in Taiwan and the 515th richest person in the world by Forbes, with an estimated wealth of $5.5 billion. Sotheby's stated in a press release that he started collecting Bordeaux wines in the 1970s and later expanded his collection to include wines from the less popular Burgundy winemaking region.
An extraordinary auction is expected to bring in $30 million for the treasures from the Rothschild family collection.
The most valuable lots on offer are the red burgundies, specifically the rare vintages from the famous La Tâche vineyard. There are two six-liter bottles from 1985, known as "methuselahs," which are valued at $120,000 to $190,000 each. Another methuselah from 1999 is expected to sell for $100,000 to $130,000. Additionally, a three-liter "jeroboam" from 1971, valued at $110,000 to $140,000, is available.
In another auction, a rare six-liter bottle of the 1982 Château Pétrus, a renowned Bordeaux red wine highly regarded by wine collectors, is anticipated to be sold for up to $65,000.
The sale also includes white burgundies and Champagnes by Dom Pérignon and Krug.

The five sales, known as "The Epicureans Atlas," will be held throughout the year, each highlighting various regions and wine varieties. The inaugural sale will be hosted in Hong Kong this November, followed by events in Paris, New York, and Beaune, Burgundy.
Additionally, Chen plans to launch his first restaurant, Le Restaurant Blanc, in Paris. He will curate the wine selection from his own collection and serve as the head sommelier. Meanwhile, the billionaire continues his wine production at the prestigious Grand Cru Musigny vineyard, which he acquired land in 2015.
Chen sold the sales occurred within five years after auctioning off $15 million worth of wine through Sothebys. In addition to being a prominent art collector, he possesses works by renowned painters such as Pablo Picasso, Gerhard Richter, and Francis Bacon.
