34-year-old Jaquana Butler from Atlanta, Georgia allegedly shot her 17-year-old son during a disagreement regarding a video game console. Regrettably, this incident is not the first time where disputes over gaming consoles have led to harm.
Only a month ago, two teenage boys were involved in an argument over a PS4 console, resulting in one of the boys firing a gun and unintentionally injuring a 60-year-old woman in the leg. Tragically, there have been cases where individuals have lost their lives while engaging in transactions related to video game consoles on online platforms. It is disconcerting that these acts of violence typically involve strangers, making this recent incident even more alarming.
Butler and her 17-year-old son were involved in a dispute concerning a video game console, as reported in various news sources. The authorities have not disclosed the specific console involved, and the details of the argument remain unclear. Despite this, Butler stands accused of shooting her son multiple times. Currently, her son is undergoing treatment at Grady Memorial Hospital, while Butler herself faces charges of aggravated assault, reckless conduct, and cruelty to children. She is presently incarcerated at Fulton County Jail.
Butler has a significant criminal history, including previous arrests and charges. She was previously found guilty of second-degree child cruelty, child cruelty by causing excessive physical or mental pain, and battery family violence, resulting in a six-year probation sentence. In her most recent encounter with law enforcement, prior to the incident where she allegedly shot her son multiple times during an argument over a video game console, she was charged with simple battery in April.
As mentioned previously, disputes over video game consoles have led to serious injuries before. In 2021, a teenager in Texas was shot while attempting to sell a PlayStation 5 console. During that time, PS5 consoles were incredibly rare due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, scalpers, and other factors. The buyer in that instance was reportedly attempting to rob the teenager but ended up fleeing the scene after shooting them, leaving the device behind. As of now, no similar context has been provided regarding the Butler incident and why she allegedly shot her 17-year-old son over a video game console.
