Lt. Brad Boimler and Lt. Sam Rutherford, portrayed by Jack Quaid and Eugene Cordero, displayed a convincing portrayal of best friends on Star Trek: Lower Decks. Following their promotions to Lieutenant junior grade, Boimler and Rutherford became roommates aboard the USS Cerritos. Their neurotic personalities, however, often clashed, leading to disagreements that could only be resolved through cosplaying as Mark Twain on the holodeck.
Rutherford and Boimler also found themselves in disagreement over the resemblance between Nicolas Locarno and Star Trek: Voyager's Lt. Tom Paris, both portrayed by Robert Duncan McNeill.
Star Trek: The Next Generation cast members have maintained close friendships for over 35 years, reflecting the strong bonds often seen among Star Trek actors. Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome also developed a close friendship in real life through their work on Star Trek: Lower Decks. Interestingly, despite playing Boimler and Rutherford on the show for many years, Jack Quaid and Eugene Cordero's busy schedules kept them from meeting in person until Tawny Newsome's birthday party.
