Tyler Perry swiftly extended an invitation to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to stay at his residence in 2020, despite not having any prior connection with the couple.
Recounting the incident on Kelly Ripa's "Let's Talk Off Camera" podcast episode on Wednesday, November 15, the 54-year-old filmmaker shared that he had sent them a message offering his support, and months later, Markle reached out and engaged in a meaningful conversation with him, likening their exchange to speaking with a trusted therapist.
Perry expressed his desire to support Harry and Meghan during their transition to living in the United States, emphasizing the importance of providing a safe and unbiased space for individuals in the entertainment industry.
Perry had sent his letter prior to the couple's marriage in 2018. After two years, the royal couple made an announcement stating their decision to step back from their roles as members of the royal family, intending to divide their time between the United Kingdom and North America.
During May 2020, the renowned creator of Madea opened the doors of his $18 million mansion in Beverly Hills to welcome the couple and their son, Prince Archie, who is currently 4 years old.
"They took refuge in my residence for an extended period. It was truly wonderful," he reminisced. "They exuded immense joy. It was an exceptionally captivating moment."
Following a span of six weeks in his abode, Harry and Meghan disclosed in August 2020 that they had acquired a lavish estate worth $14 million in Montecito, California.
When their daughter, Princess Lilibet, was born in June 2021, they named Perry her godfather.
Perry told Ripa that he calls his royal goddaughter “Little Lili.”
"He can't help but gush about her beauty. She is simply stunning," he exclaimed. "Their children are equally as beautiful, that's all I can say. Archie and Lili are breathtaking."
In the Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, Meghan had previously explained the process of building a close bond with Perry.
After departing from the royal family and residing in Canada temporarily, she expressed being "completely devastated." She described herself as emotionally overwhelmed, shedding tears continuously. When contacting Perry, she described their conversation as healing and restorative.
"Opening up to someone who knows nothing at all is sometimes easier, and that moment between Tyler and me was exactly that," she remarked.
In the docuseries, Perry recounted the phone conversation that marked his first interaction with Meghan.
He mentioned being able to sense the fear, as it was quite evident to him. Recollecting her apprehension towards the paparazzi, he stated, "She was genuinely frightened of them, fearing that they would ruin her life." Perry elaborated further, emphasizing, "Having witnessed my mother endure years of mistreatment, I was familiar with the signs... This woman has undoubtedly experienced abuse, and so has [Harry]."
