Two sailors from the US Navy have been reported missing during operations off the coast of Somalia on Thursday, as per US Central Command. The statement released on Friday mentioned ongoing search and rescue efforts to locate the sailors.
The short statement did not provide any additional details about the activities of the missing sailors, except to mention that they were "forward-deployed" to the US Navy's 5th Fleet area of operations and were "supporting a wide range of missions."
"Out of consideration for the affected families, we will refrain from disclosing further information at this time," the statement concluded.
The US has a limited military presence in Somalia, with a primary focus on addressing the threat posed by the extremist Islamist organization al-Shabaab. This group has been responsible for carrying out attacks against the Somali government, leading the US to recognize them as a terrorist organization. Alongside providing training for Somali forces, the US has also collaborated with the Somali government in conducting targeted strikes against al-Shabaab.
US Africa Command states that Al-Shabaab is the most active al-Qaeda network globally, demonstrating both the will and ability to attack US forces and undermine US security interests.
