Tron 3, the third installment of the Tron saga titled Tron: Ares, has become the latest casualty of the Hollywood double strike delays. Due to a shortage of staff resulting from the ongoing strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), the release of the film has been postponed indefinitely. Joachim Rønning, the director of Tron: Ares, expressed his extreme frustration at the situation and urged all parties involved to resolve their differences promptly.
The strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA have had a severe impact on the entertainment industry, bringing it to a standstill. Alongside the demand for better and fair wages, the strikes have caused a delay in numerous highly anticipated shows and movies, including Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse. The WGA strike, which has been ongoing for over 100 days, is expected to resume negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) this week, following a review of the studios' latest proposal. On the other hand, there seems to be no prospect of an agreement in sight for the actors' union.
Content has sparked extensive discussion among the public and industry insiders, including Arrow star Stephen Amell. Tron 3 director recently added his voice to the conversation, taking to Instagram to express his frustrations. He questioned the sudden availability of time when each day is precious and called these tactics extremely frustrating. The director also revealed that the production of Tron: Ares was supposed to commence this week, but around 150 individuals were let go due to the ongoing strikes. This indefinite situation adds further challenges for everyone involved. Rønning implores the AMPTP, WGA, and SAG-AFTRA to resume negotiations and remain at the table until a satisfactory agreement is reached. He stresses the importance of diplomatic conversations, ensuring that all guild members can return to work under fair conditions.
Coincidentally, the upcoming Tron film, Tron: Ares, will continue to explore the theme of AI, which has been a focus in the previous films. This contentious topic has sparked debates in both installments. Recognizing the potential danger of this technology, director Rønning emphasizes the need for regulations. "The threat that AI poses to creators is undeniable," he stated.
Tron: Ares will serve as a direct sequel to the 2010 film Tron: Legacy. The story will revolve around a new character named Ares, portrayed by Jared Leto. A computer program, Ares embarks on a journey from the digital world to the real one. The cast also includes Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, and Cameron Monaghan. As for the returning cast members, it remains unknown if Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde, and Garrett Hedlund will reprise their roles in Tron 3.
