Assistant coach Kevin Maxen of the Jacksonville Jaguars made sports history by publicly revealing that he is gay. The 31-year-old discussed his sexuality in an interview with Outsports, which was published on July 20. Maxen shared that he no longer wants to hide his relationships or living arrangements.

With the immense love and support from his family, friends, colleagues, and peers, as well as the courage and sacrifice of his partner, Maxen felt prepared to share his truth. He realized that he deserved to both give and receive love, and he hopes that by sharing his story, he can inspire others to embrace their own lives and take control of their narratives.

During this revelation, Maxen also disclosed that he has been in a relationship with his boyfriend, Nicholas Garcia, for over two years. Garcia has made appearances in several of Maxen's recent Instagram posts, including a collection of pictures uploaded on June 29 under the caption, "Life as Kev knows it: June." The slideshow featured a couple selfie and images of Maxen's dog.

After getting acquainted with the families and partners of the Jaguars team and staff over time, Maxen felt compelled to no longer keep quiet about Garcia. "I experienced guilt for not being able to do the same, for letting myself down," he confessed. "I desire a partner who can share that aspect of life with me."

He continued, "Being a Black Jew who has had relationships with both men and women, and having worked as a strength coach at the highest level of professional football, I have come to understand that my appearance, beliefs, and particularly my physical or emotional attractions should not determine my worth in the eyes of myself or others. These factors should also not prescribe what I believe I am capable of achieving."

Maxen's disclosure is a groundbreaking milestone, as he becomes the inaugural openly gay coach in a U.S. professional men's sports league. In response, his fellow colleagues and players at Jaguars showered him with an overwhelming amount of support.

Outsports received praise from Marcus Pollard, the Jaguars' director of player development, who expressed his privilege in working alongside Kevin. Pollard described Maxen as a diligent, devoted, and flourishing member of the team.

Jaguars center Brandon Linder expressed his gratitude in being trusted by Maxen to confide in him about his sexuality. He proudly called Maxen a friend and looked forward to witnessing the bright future ahead for him. Linder believed Maxen's story had the power to inspire and support many individuals. He commended Maxen and wished him well. Before becoming a part of the Florida football team's strength and conditioning staff for the 2022/2023 season, Maxen had a successful career as a strength coach at Baylor University, Vanderbilt University, University of Iowa, and the Army football team.

Maxen's declaration comes after two years since Carl Nassib, a prominent figure in the NFL, became the first openly gay player in the league. In a June 2021 Instagram video, the 30-year-old former Las Vegas Raiders player courageously stated, "I wanted to take a moment to share that I am gay." Maxen had contemplated this step for some time but now feels at ease discussing it openly. He expressed gratitude for his wonderful life, supportive family, amazing friends, and fulfilling career.
