During Sunday mass in a northern Mexican city, a church roof caved in, resulting in the deaths of at least nine individuals and 40 injuries according to authorities. Rescue operations continued through the night, with an additional 30 individuals believed to be trapped beneath the debris. Military personnel, alongside emergency services, utilized floodlights, rescue dogs, and earth moving equipment to locate and extract survivors from the remnants of the church in Ciudad Madero, a city situated on the Gulf coast in close proximity to the port of Tampico.
Footage on social media showed the moment the church roof caved in, puffs of gray smoke billowing into the air, followed by the toppling of yellow brick outer walls.

Nine individuals lost their lives, while another 40 individuals were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Additionally, there are 30 worshippers whose whereabouts are currently unknown, as stated by Jorge Cuéllar, the spokesperson for the Security Ministry of Tamaulipas state. This state shares a border with Texas.
During an interview on the Foro TV news channel, Cuéllar expressed his gratitude towards local entrepreneurs who generously provided equipment to assist in the clearing of debris and support the ongoing rescue operations.
Bishop Jose Armando Alvarez of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tampico has reported that the church roof collapsed while worshipers were receiving communion. He has requested prayers for the survivors and mentioned ongoing efforts to rescue those still trapped under the debris. In a recorded message shared through social media, Bishop Armando emphasized the ongoing rescue operations.
