After winning the song of the year award at the Country Music Awards on Wednesday, Tracy Chapman's 1988 hit "Fast Car" continues to add to her legacy. Despite her absence from the telecast held at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, Sarah Evans, a prominent country star, announced Chapman as the winner and read a message on her behalf.

"I apologize for not being able to join you all this evening. It is indeed a great honor for my song to receive recognition after 35 years since its debut. I'm truly amazed. I would like to express my gratitude to the CMAs, and especially to Luke (Combs), as well as all the Fast Car fans," Chapman's representative, Evans, stated. Achieving a CMA win is a remarkable accomplishment considering that "Fast Car" was first released 35 years ago, and recently gained renewed popularity when country artist Luke Combs covered this chart-topping single in July."

Chapman's "Fast Car" achieved the remarkable feat of reaching No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart, with Combs' rendition. This accomplishment made her the first Black woman to hold this position since the chart's inception in 1990. Additionally, Chapman's sole writing credit on the song propelled her to the top spot on Billboards Country Songwriters chart.

Chapman expressed surprise at being on the country charts but felt gratitude and honor. He congratulated Luke for his success and expressed appreciation for the newfound fans who embraced "Fast Car." Combs also won a CMA Award for his rendition of "Fast Car" in the single of the year category on Wednesday.

The song "Fast Car" was the initial release from Chapman's eponymous first album. It garnered her a Grammy Award in 1989 for her outstanding performance as a female pop vocalist, and it was also nominated for record and song of the year. In addition, Chapman triumphed in the categories of best new artist and best contemporary folk album.

The CMAs aired on ABC on Wednesday and were hosted by country singer Luke Bryan and former football player Peyton Manning.
