Tomba, the popular PlayStation game released nearly 26 years ago, is set to make a comeback on modern gaming systems thanks to Limited Run Games and the Carbon Engine. Limited Run Games has teamed up with the original director and producer of Tomba to bring this cult classic to a whole new generation of gamers. Originally known as Tombi, this 2D platformer was developed by Whoopee Camp, an independent studio led by former Capcom developer Tokuro Fujiwara. In Tomba, players took control of the pink-haired protagonist as he battled against the Evil Pigs to retrieve his late grandfather's bracelet and lift the curses that had befallen the land. The game's success led to the release of a sequel, Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return, in 1999. While these titles were originally exclusive to the PlayStation line, the introduction of the Carbon Engine will open up opportunities for Tomba to be enjoyed on additional platforms.
During the LRG3 show on July 12, Limited Run Games announced a collaboration with Fujiwara to bring Tomba into the modern era. As part of the reveal, the original opening movie for Tomba was showcased, featuring a scene where Tomba chases animals and faces off against a group of Evil Pigs. During the scuffle, Tomba is knocked out and his grandfather's bracelet is stolen by the pigs, setting the stage for the game's plot. The trailer concluded by confirming that Tomba will be released using Limited Run's Carbon Engine, which allows older games to be played on modern hardware.
At present, Limited Run Games has not announced a release date for Tomba. Additionally, Limited Run has confirmed that Harumi Fujita, the original composer for Tomba, will return to create a new soundtrack for the game's re-release. Fujita's recent work includes composing soundtracks for games like Windjammers 2 and Streets of Rage 4.
It is uncertain how much of the original soundtrack will be retained in the upcoming re-release of Tomba. As Limited Run Games continues to announce the re-release of other retro games like the Gex Trilogy, it remains to be seen if Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return will receive the same treatment as Tomba in the future.
Currently, Tomba is available for PS1, and there are ongoing developments for PC, PS4, PS5, and Switch versions.
