The Big Picture

Episode 4 of Chucky Season 3 continues the gruesome and spooky season with a Halloween party at the White House, where Chucky increases his kill count.

In the film, Jennifer Tilly portrays the character of Tiffany, who gradually adapts to the prison environment and develops a captivating connection with renowned celebrity chef Evelyn. However, Tiffany's world is shattered when she discovers that Evelyn is responsible for the death of her sister. Consumed by vengeance, Tiffany resorts to voodoo as a means to seek retribution. This ultimately leads to a shocking turn of events where Evelyn unwittingly inflicts severe harm upon herself in a kitchen-themed sequence that manages to be simultaneously repulsive and darkly comedic.

Season 3, Episode 4 of Chucky, titled “Dressed to Kill,” not only maintains the same level of gruesomeness as last week’s episode but also transports us back to the present-day timeline. In perfect alignment with the eerie season we find ourselves in, the episode showcases a spectacular Halloween celebration at the White House. However, it is worthwhile to remember that Chucky (Brad Dourif) gravitates towards crimson hues and has a specific quota for his kills. So, what is his tally for this week?

In Episode 4, Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) adjusts to her new prison life while awaiting her execution date. However, her claims of being Tiffany Valentine are dismissed by everyone, as she has taken over Jennifer Tilly's body. Despite this, she gains special treatment and celebrity status due to her identity crisis. It is in a special ward that she encounters celebrity chef Evelyn Elliot, portrayed by Nia Vardalos from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, in an entertaining guest appearance. Tiffany enthusiastically expresses her admiration for Evelyn, confessing that she incorporated many of her techniques into her murderous acts. This unusual statement captures Evelyn's attention, initially fostering a potential friendship between them. However, their camaraderie takes a sudden turn when Evelyn discovers that Tiffany is responsible for the death of Jennifer's sister, Meg Tilly. While Evelyn has her own violent history, having killed her husband and his lover and cooking them into a dish she aptly named "Slut Soufflé," she draws the line at fratricide. She confronts Tiffany, condemning her as sick and evil, and walks away in disbelief, ignoring Tiffany's desperate insistence that she is not Jennifer Tilly. Tiffany's struggle to find someone who will believe her continues.

In a later scene, Tiffany is delivered her "legally required religious belongings." These items include a "Voodoo For Dummies" guidebook and several voodoo dolls. Prior to this, when Evelyn stormed off, Tiffany cleverly stashes the cigarette she had been smoking in her pocket. She does so with the intention of using it to bind one of the dolls to Evelyn. While Evelyn is occupied with teaching the inmates how to cook, Tiffany invokes the power of Damballa. Delighting in her sadistic tendencies, Tiffany manipulates the doll, causing any harm she inflicts on it to affect Evelyn as well. Following Tiffany's voodoo instructions, Evelyn proceeds to self-harm, slicing her neck with a knife, then cutting her arm and wrist.

But Evelyn's actions don't stop there. She goes on to use a peeler to remove the skin from her hand, an incredibly shocking visual. She also forcefully smashes her head against a wall, places her cheek on a hot burner, runs her hand along a scorching grill, and, for the grand finale, submerges her head in a large pot of boiling water. Emerging from the water, even if just for a moment, her face is deformed and melting, with eyeballs drooping from their sockets and skin literally sloughing off and turning into mush. It's undeniably repulsive...yet oddly amusing. While the acts themselves are horrifying and repugnant, Vardalos delivers exceptional physical comedy. Combined with Tiffany's sardonic playfulness (she even sings "These Boots Are Made For Walking" at one point), this scene becomes a standout moment in the episode.

As previously mentioned, a grand Halloween celebration is being held at the White House, featuring elaborate costumes and festivities. Jake, Devon, and Lexy dress up in various versions of the iconic Good Guy character, hoping to capture footage of Chucky's mischievous behavior. They believe that recording Chucky in action will finally convince others of his existence. However, their task is not as simple as it seems, especially given the heightened security of the White House. Despite the festive atmosphere, Chucky, disguised as the Phantom from Phantom of the Opera, plots in the background, paying homage to Joseph Collins, the deceased son of the First Family who once wore the same costume on Halloween. Chucky spends most of the time upstairs with Henry, who opts out of attending the party. While Chucky is seen stealing a knife, it remains unclear if he intends to use it, creating a clever misdirection for a shocking conclusion.

Following a brief power outage that temporarily halts the festivities, Annie, Henry's nanny for the evening, enters the party. She unknowingly positions herself under a large chandelier, which viewers have glimpsed throughout the episode. Suddenly, a screw falls from the ceiling, and the audience understands the impending danger. Fortunately, Jake pushes Devon out of harm's way just in time, narrowly avoiding disaster as the chandelier crashes down. Despite their rescue, the incident results in several casualties. The scene is presented from an aerial viewpoint, showcasing the gruesome aftermath, including a particularly graphic depiction of a woman who has been severed at the waist, her intestines gruesomely exposed. In a shocking turn, she takes a selfie before succumbing to her imminent demise. Additionally, Annie, seemingly unharmed apart from some scratches and emotional distress, then surprisingly has her face cleanly sliced off by the chandelier's crystal shards.

We later discover that Chucky deliberately loosened the screws of the chandelier, ensuring that the party would ultimately end in disaster. Claiming a total of 13 lives (which exceeded his intended target by seven because of his overachieving nature), Chucky proceeds to carry out the familiar ritual we have become accustomed to. As the thunder rolls and the lightning strikes, it appears that everything is going according to plan. However, when Chucky removes his mask and gazes upon his reflection in the mirror, he is horrified to discover that his aging process has accelerated even further. The ritual did not yield the expected results, leaving Chucky still facing his impending death with no apparent way to halt it.
