The New Orleans Saints remain undefeated at the start of the season after a strong defensive performance led them to a 20-17 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Monday night. The Panthers were held to a total of 239 yards on offense, with the Saints putting constant pressure on rookie quarterback Bryce Young. Young managed only 153 passing yards and one touchdown on 22-of-33 attempts, while being sacked four times throughout the game.
Despite securing the victory, Derek Carr and the Saints faced difficulties in advancing the ball, especially in the first half, on a night dominated by strong defensive performances.
New Orleans head coach Dennis Allen expressed his satisfaction with the win, stating, "It was a significant victory for us. Starting the season with a 2-0 record and securing a divisional win is extremely important. Although it wasn't as flawless as we would have preferred, I noticed improvements in certain aspects of our game."
We simply need to maintain our perseverance, continue putting in the effort, and strive for improvement. However, it is a positive situation to encounter victories while pursuing these goals.
A cagey affair
Neither team could gain a substantial advantage over the other in the early stages, resulting in both teams settling for field goals. At halftime, the scoreline stood at 6-3.
The second quarter was forgettable for both quarterbacks. Young struggled to advance and nearly committed a turnover within the first 30 seconds. On the other hand, Carr was intercepted by Vonn Bell towards the end of the quarter, granting possession to Carolina in New Orleans' territory.
The Panthers were unable to capitalize on the resulting drive, however. Young was a victim of a strip sack on third-and-six to hand the ball back to the Saints.

Carr faced two consecutive sack plays in the closing minute of the half, marking a disastrous second period for both teams.
The game was in desperate need of some excitement, which was eventually brought forth by Chris Olave, a wide receiver for the Saints, in the third quarter.
The 23-year-old skillfully tipped the ball to himself during a stretch, and then dove to make an impressive catch, making it a strong contender for catch of the season. This incredible play allowed the Saints to gain an impressive 41 yards. Eventually, New Orleans managed to convert the play into a touchdown when running back Tony Jones Jr. powered through from a short distance.
In the fourth quarter, Jones added another rushing touchdown, further increasing the Saints' lead, while the Panthers struggled to reach the end zone.
Young eventually connected with Adam Thielen in the final quarter for a touchdown and a two-point conversion, but it was not enough. The Carolina Panthers secured possession for the last time in the game. The New Orleans Saints successfully recovered the subsequent onside kick and strategically ran down the clock to secure the victory.
The season is still Young
It has been a challenging beginning to Bryce Young's NFL career with his team currently holding a 0-2 record. He encountered difficulties in the match against the Atlanta Falcons during Week 1 and exhibited moments of ineffectiveness when facing the Saints.

Despite facing early challenges, the rookie displayed accountability post-game and expressed his strong determination to enhance his skills.
"I have numerous areas to improve upon, several things I can strive to enhance," he stated. "We must collectively make progress... We all aspire to self-reflect and develop."
"We need to improve as a team, and it begins with me."
The Panthers aim to deliver an enhanced performance in their upcoming match against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. However, they will have to face this challenge without linebacker Shaq Thompson, who is anticipated to be out due to a "significant" knee injury, as stated by head coach Frank Reich.
Theres so much that we have to clean up
Carr aimed to duplicate his impressive Week 1 display, where he amassed a noteworthy 305 passing yards against the Tennessee Titans. However, prior to halftime, he succumbed to a series of errors, frequently failing to connect with his receivers and displaying evident signs of frustration.
The Saints escaped with the victory but the veteran quarterback, who arrived in New Orleans during the offseason, acknowledges there is room for improvement.

"There is a considerable amount of work that still needs to be accomplished, although we did encounter a few opportunities," Carr stated following the game. "There is plenty that requires improvement, but the satisfaction of rectifying those issues is immense when accompanied by a victory.
"We currently hold a 2-0 record, and I believe we have yet to reach the level of performance we all anticipate. However, we remain determined to continually strive, persist in our efforts, and rectify any shortcomings."
Carr and company will be looking iron out these flaws when they take on the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
