The USA advanced to the knockout stages of the Women's World Cup after a goalless draw against Portugal on Tuesday. Despite a late surge from the tournament newcomers, the defending champions managed to maintain their title defense at Eden Park. Playing with high stakes, the four-time winners missed several opportunities to score, and the introduction of experienced player Megan Rapinoe in the second half provided little improvement against Portugal's strong defensive strategies.
In stoppage time, they managed to escape a major scare as Ana Capeta's shot hit the post. The striker then earned a crucial free kick just outside the box a few minutes later. However, they held on during the intense final moments of the Group E clash.
Goalkeeper Ines Pereira easily blocked Lynn Williams' header in the fourth minute, while co-captain Alex Morgan missed the target with her shot from the center of the box in the sixth minute.
Williams had another header on target in the 14th minute off a cross from Sophia Smith, but Pereira easily gathered that effort.

Williams had a chance in the 27th minute, as she fired a shot directly at the Portuguese goalkeeper. However, her follow-up attempt went over the crossbar. In stoppage time, Pereira once again made a great save to deny Williams' final shot of the half. Despite the substitution of Rapinoe in the 61st minute and Rodman in the 84th minute, the U.S. front line did not improve.

In the final moments of the match, Ana Capeta's stoppage-time shot sent shockwaves through the stadium when it struck the post. The Americans rushed to piece together a desperate defense to prevent a fate that seemed unimaginable until then.
The United States progresses to the final 16 in Melbourne, where they are highly likely to encounter Sweden, following their second-place finish in Group E. The Netherlands, who inflicted a 7-0 defeat upon Vietnam, secured the top spot in the group.

"It's challenging to come in second place; our initial aim was to be the first team to go through," Morgan stated. "This team put in maximum effort, but unfortunately, we were unable to score. Towards the end, we simply had to remain strong and secure the result in order to progress. Now, we direct our focus on moving forward."
"Our shots are just not finding the back of the net," Morgan continued. "We've had numerous corner kicks, countless opportunities, and plenty of well-placed crosses – it's just been a case of bad luck, you know."
