Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is set to be the biggest PS5 exclusive leading into the holiday season. Following the success of the original in 2018 and the spin-off Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales in 2020, Insomniac has established itself as a studio that truly understands the beloved wall-crawling superhero. Excitement is at an all-time high, and the recent gameplay demo showcased during the PlayStation Showcase in May suggests that this sequel is shaping up to be a thrilling experience.
Of course, a superhero's story would be incomplete without a compelling lineup of adversaries, and Spider-Man boasts one of the most diverse, colorful, and dangerous collections of villains in the comic book world. While the original game featured iconic characters like Kingpin and Doctor Octopus, Insomniac still has a wealth of foes to tap into for Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Although there are still several months until the game's release, and the studio likely has surprises in store, there are already a handful of confirmed enemies that our friendly neighborhood web-slinger will face off against. While there may be potential allies in the form of anti-heroes like Wraith, Black Cat, and Prowler, the following characters are confirmed to be adversaries for our wall-crawling hero.
Kraven The Hunter
The Lizard
First introduced in the 2021 reveal trailer and later showcased in the gameplay demo mentioned earlier, Kraven is a long-standing adversary of Spidey. His exceptional hunting abilities, unparalleled tracking skills, and expertise in hand-to-hand combat make him a formidable opponent for our beloved superhero. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 positions Kraven as a primary antagonist, driving the captivating narrative and orchestrating pivotal moments. Fuelled by an insatiable desire for the thrill of the hunt, Kraven relentlessly pursues his ultimate prey: Spider-Man. Undoubtedly, Sony aims to shine the spotlight on Kraven, evident by the forthcoming feature film starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson hitting theaters just weeks before the game's release.
A tragic result of Dr. Curt Connors' science experiments gone awry, the Lizard is another notable character from Spider-Man's golden age in comic book history. In an attempt to regenerate his missing limb using reptile DNA, Connors unintentionally transformed himself into a colossal Lizard, endowed with immense strength, agility, and brutality. Deviating from the conventional design, Insomniac's portrayal of The Lizard exhibits a more literal behemoth-like appearance, resembling an actual giant creature rather than the anthropomorphic depiction found in the source material. The presence of such a colossal entity roaming freely in New York City may attract the attention of Kraven the Hunter before Spider-Man has a chance to intervene.
Venom
Other Possible Villains
A much-beloved character ever since his very first appearance, Venom stands out as one of Spider-Man's most famous and wicked adversaries. Created from an extraterrestrial symbiote that Peter Parker rejects, this malevolent entity then attaches itself to the embittered Eddie Brock. Venom embodies raw vengeance and will go to any lengths to bring ruin to Spider-Man's existence. Insomniac, the developers, have already confirmed that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will take a different approach, revealing that Brock will not be the vessel for Venom. Consequently, there has been much speculation surrounding the true identity of this iconic nemesis, and fans eagerly await the exciting unveiling and ultimate confrontation that await in the game.
The aforementioned are the confirmed villains set to make an appearance, however, there exists a plethora of possibilities to further expand the roster with additional adversaries. The original game introduced Norman Osborn and dropped subtle hints at his alter ego, the infamous Green Goblin, who ranks among one of Spider-Man's most formidable foes. Coupled with the presence of Kingpin, Rhino, and Tombstone, it is evident that the sequel has no shortage of potential villains to make their mark.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 launches on October 20th, 2023, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
