Star Wars fans eagerly await the release of Ahsoka and are eager for any details about the show. Recently, Lars Mikkelsen discussed his return as Grand Admiral Thrawn. In Ahsoka, the story will revolve around Ahsoka, played by Dawson, and Sabine Wren, portrayed by Liu Bordizzo, as they embark on a mission to find their friend Ezra Bridger. In order to save his friends, Ezra had previously surrendered to Thrawn at the end of Star Wars Rebels. While Ahsoka will explore a wider narrative beyond resolving the loose ends of Star Wars Rebels, creator Dave Filoni has confirmed that the show will maintain a strong connection to the events of the previous series, particularly the season finale where Ezra became separated from his companions. The future adventures of Ahsoka, Sabine, Ezra, and Hera Syndulla remain uncertain and open to speculation.
While the majority of the Ahsoka cast did not reprise their roles in the animated show, Mikkelsen had the rare opportunity to portray Thrawn in both Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka. Unlike most actors who would typically re-watch the show or movie where they first played the character, Mikkelsen took a different approach in preparing for his role as Thrawn in Ahsoka. During an appearance on Entertainment Weekly's podcast Dagobah Dispatch, Mikkelsen shared that he chose not to revisit old Rebels episodes to familiarize himself with how he previously voiced and played the character. Instead, he wanted to detach himself from that and create something entirely new.
The variation in Thrawn's character may be attributed to the fact that Ahsoka targets a more mature audience compared to Star Wars Rebels, which is rated TV-Y7 and suitable for children aged seven and above. Ahsoka is expected to follow the footsteps of The Mandalorian, which is likely to have a TV-14 rating, indicating that it contains material unsuitable for viewers under fourteen. This higher age restriction allows Ahsoka to explore content that would have been too mature for a children's show like Rebels. While the exact reason for Thrawn's transformation remains unclear, it is possible that the writers took advantage of their creative freedom to develop a more ruthless character for an older audience.
Ahsoka premieres in August 2023 on Disney Plus.
