Highlights
Time skips in The Witcher 4 will take the franchise in a new direction, set 100 years after the previous installment, potentially introducing new characters and storylines.
The outcomes of Geralt and Ciri in The Witcher 4 remain unclear due to the various endings in The Witcher 3. However, there is a possibility for the comeback of beloved characters such as Triss, Yennefer, Lambert, and Keira. Additionally, The Witcher 4 may include characters with extended lifespans like sorceresses, elves, dopplers, and Gaunter O'Dimm, aiming to maintain continuity and provide a sense of familiarity for fans.
Navigating time skips in a story is always challenging, especially for franchises that need to maintain the overall plot and keep fan-favorite characters. Anime series like One Piece and Boruto often incorporate time skips, while gaming series like Fallout have successfully used this mechanism. CD Projekt Red plans to use time skipping in The Witcher 4 to create a new era for the franchise, setting the events of the upcoming game 100 years after its predecessor. This extended period of time raises questions about which characters, other than Geralt and Ciri, will appear in the sequel.
The Witcher 3's multiple endings have created confusion regarding the fate of the characters. The choices made by players in the game influence Ciri's destiny, whether she becomes a Witcher, assumes the Nilfgaardian throne, or disappears after fulfilling her purpose. The worst ending in The Witcher 3 sees Ciri's death, and possibly that of the protagonist as well. As a result, it remains uncertain whether Geralt and Ciri will return for the sequel. The focus now shifts to speculating about the rest of the cast in The Witcher 4.
A Few Characters from The Witcher 3 Are Equipped to Survive The Witcher 4's Time Skip
The Witcher 4 will introduce players to the new School of the Lynx, potentially bringing back some characters from The Witcher 3 based on their story. Despite having the same name as Lambert and Keira Metz's School of the Lynx, this addition is not directly connected to it. However, many believe that Lambert and Keira are likely to appear in The Witcher 4 due to this similarity, even though their deaths in The Witcher 3 were optional. Their inclusion could be used by CD Projekt Red to distinguish between the game and novel canon, providing a logical reason for their presence.
In The Witcher series, sorceresses have significantly long lifespans, making it reasonable to assume that both Triss and Yennefer will survive the time gap leading up to the events of The Witcher 4. Triss, one of the younger sorceresses and a romantic option in The Witcher 3, has been consistently featured in every edition of the series. Her involvement in King Foltest's royal court, understanding of the political landscape, and assistance in the mage escape from Novigrad have positioned her for an expanded role in The Witcher 4, potentially even rising to a position of power in Kovir.
Yennefer's potential appearance in The Witcher 4 is similar to that of Triss. Both sorceresses possess exceptional skills and ancient magical knowledge, which could allow Yennefer to survive the significant time leap in the game. While Yennefer may not play a central role in the upcoming title, her frequent appearances and nurturing role towards Ciri in The Witcher 3 make her presence worthy of being replicated in The Witcher 4.
The Elves and Dopplers, such as Avallac'h and Dudu, also have similarly long lifespans. Therefore, they are viable options to be included in The Witcher 4. Fans are also eager to see the return of Gaunter O'Dimm, the Evil Incarnate character, as his lack of a lifespan allows him to continue his villainous role in the series. Although it is unclear if The Witcher 4 will introduce an entirely new cast, retaining a few beloved characters from the franchise will help maintain a sense of familiarity in the game.
