As the final episode of The Winter King's first season draws near, episode 9 raises the stakes even further for Arthur. MGM+'s adaptation of Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles saga presents a more realistic portrayal of the King Arthur legend. Throughout the season, Arthur, who had previously been banished, returns to Britain following the demise of his father, King Uther. He faces the daunting task of unifying the kingdom in the midst of a Saxon invasion. While Arthur demonstrates traits of honor and justice that make him a capable leader, his immaturity has led him to make regrettable decisions.
In this instance, he bravely proposed to Ceinwyn, the daughter of the King of Powys, with the intention of uniting their kingdoms. However, he later ended the engagement and instead married her best friend Guinevere. This decision had severe consequences for Arthur in episode 8 of Winter King, as King Gorfydd had Bishop Bedwin executed after failed peace talks. In the upcoming ninth episode, Arthur will have to face the consequences of his questionable choices. The question remains, will Dumnonia and Arthur still be standing when The Winter King season 2 arrives?
7. Powys Has Allied With The Saxons
In Episode 9, Derfel (played by Stuart Campbell) and Morgan (played by Valene Kane) are expelled from Powys. They are entrusted with the task of returning Bedwin's body to Dumnonia as a "message" to Arthur. Meanwhile, Gundleus (played by Simon Merrells) echoes his previous behavior of leading a raid on Derfel's village by howling like a wolf. During their journey back, they encounter Ceinwyn, who expresses her apologies for Bedwin's demise and shares some troubling news.
After Arthur cancels the engagement, Gorfydd has arranged for Ceinwyn to be betrothed to a Saxon instead. This not only brands him as a traitor but also confirms that a war with Powys is inevitable. Arthur finds himself grappling with the grief of his friend's death while simultaneously facing the looming threat of conflict with Powys and the Saxons. The fact that Dumnonia lacks the necessary manpower and weaponry for such a battle only exacerbates the situation.
6. Arthur Exiled Nimue To The Isle Of The Dead
After his return from Powys, Derfel has a strong desire to meet Nimue (Ellie James). However, he quickly becomes aware of her violent conflict with the Christians who are constructing a settlement at Avalon, and how her "curse" resulted in the deaths of three men due to illness. In episode 8, Arthur becomes suspicious of Nimue's involvement in their poisoning, leading him to exile her to the Isle of the Dead. In the Winter King book, this island is a secluded peninsula reserved for Britain's enemies or those considered mentally unstable.
The Isle of the Dead derives its name from the notion that those banished there are essentially dead, despite their physical existence. No one who is sent there ever returns, and although Arthur justifies it as either punishment or a death sentence, Derfel strongly disagrees with his decision. He refuses to believe that Nimue is a murderer and embarks on his own investigation into the deaths. Guinevere, in secret, urges him to delve deeper, convinced that Dumnonia will require Nimue's abilities for the impending battle.
5. Bishop Bedwin Is Buried
Bedwin, a key supporting character on the show, has provided valuable advice to Arthur throughout his saga, even in moments of disagreement. Uther named him one of baby Mordred's protectors shortly before his death. However, with Bedwin and Owain's deaths, as well as Gundleus attempting to assassinate Mordred, all three of the future king's designated protectors have already perished.
In the ninth episode, a funeral service is held for the late bishop, led by his ambitious successor Samsum. While Bedwin took a gentle approach in his efforts to introduce Christianity to Britain, Samsum has already demonstrated impatience. As Morgan, an aspiring pagan druidess, mourns for Bedwin, who expressed his love for her in his final moments, she also regards Samsum with suspicion.
4. Derfel Finds Proof Nimue Is Innocent
Derfel conducts amateur detective work in Avalon, interviewing the Christians whose friends succumbed to Nimue's "curse." Upon investigation, he discovers that all of them had consumed water from the same well, which was contaminated by a deceased animal. This tainted water is what caused the Christians to become ill or lose their lives. Filled with anger, Derfel confronts Arthur, revealing this revelation. Derfel insists that Arthur should have trusted Nimue instead of hastily jumping to conclusions. This disagreement sparks their first major argument. Despite his lingering resentment, Derfel remains loyal to Arthur.
3. Arthur Has To Overcome Trust Issues
Arthur's character has been somewhat overlooked in the series, with the early episodes failing to provide much insight into his desires or motivations. However, Winter King episode 9 delves deeper into his psyche as he becomes furious when Derfel questions his authority. He begins to realize that Guinevere likely influenced him from behind the scenes, which leaves him feeling betrayed by his new wife. This also prompts him to question the loyalty of others in the kingdom whom he can truly trust.
After engaging in a fierce altercation, Guinevere eventually reunites with the distraught Arthur and realizes that his trust issues stem from deep-seated trauma. The emotional aftermath of being banished by his father still haunts him, causing him to heavily rely on himself. Guinevere reassures Arthur that he no longer has to face his challenges alone and reminds him that as the leader of Dumnonia, it is crucial for him to place his trust in others, especially if he wishes to earn their trust in return.
2. Arthur Comes Up With A Plan To Stop The Saxons
Motivated by Guinevere's words, Arthur readies his newly polished sword Excalibur and prepares to confront the Powys situation directly. He gains further insight into Gorfydd's allegiance with the Saxons through his trusted ally King Tewdric (Sagar Arya) and realizes he has one strategic move that could secure valuable time. Recognizing that the Saxons are lacking tin resources for their weapons, Arthur contemplates offering it to them in exchange for a temporary truce. This calculated risk presents an opportunity for Arthur to seize the advantage and dismantle Gorfydd's forces in Powys. Although uncertain, it might just yield positive results.
1. Derfel Sets Out To Rescue Nimue
In episode 9 of The Winter King, the story reaches an intense climax as Guinevere reveals to Arthur that Derfel has been sighted heading towards the Isle of the Dead. This mysterious place is known for trapping its visitors indefinitely, making it an incredibly perilous situation for Arthur. While he is preoccupied with dealing with Powys, his loyal companion, Derfel, steps up to undertake a daring and risky mission to rescue Nimue. Although Derfel has already demonstrated his resourcefulness, the ultimate question remains: will he succeed in freeing Nimue from this nightmarish confinement?
