Aubrey Plaza, star of The White Lotus season 2, has shared her initial interpretation of the finale scene between Daphne and Ethan. In that closing episode, Ethan confesses to Daphne that he believes his wife, Harper, has been unfaithful with Daphne's husband, Cameron. Daphne is momentarily devastated by this revelation, her pain evident on her face, before shifting her focus to Ethan. Although The White Lotus season 2 strongly implies that Daphne and Ethan engage in a sexual encounter in a more secluded area of the beach, this is never fully confirmed.
During an interview on The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, Plaza discussed the ambiguity surrounding the endings of The White Lotus season 2. Plaza revealed that while filming, she personally did not perceive any sexual undertones between Daphne and Ethan, but acknowledged that others had a different perspective.
I vividly recall the day when Will and Meghann, Ethan and Daphne, were shooting their scene at Isola Bella. As I watched, there was no hint of any sexual undertone in that particular scene. From my perspective, it seemed like they were simply engaged in a conversation. They appeared to be affectionate and walked away together. However, I distinctly remember overhearing someone from the crew mention that they must have done something in the cave or elsewhere. I was taken aback and thought, "What? My husband?!" This memory has stayed with me because it made me realize that the interpretation of these scenes is truly subjective. It made me realize that I have no idea what actually took place.
The White Lotus Is Ambiguous (But Not In The Way It Seems)
The White Lotus season 2 hints at a potential connection between Daphne and Ethan through carefully crafted scenes. Their meaningful glances, accompanied by a swirling camera, imply that something significant may have transpired between them. While it is plausible that Ethan halted his actions upon reaching the cave, realizing his deep affection and desire for Harper, a simpler explanation could be that Daphne and Ethan found emotional and physical fulfillment by stepping outside the boundaries of their marriage.
The uncertainty surrounding whether Cameron and Harper were romantically involved is still a topic of discussion. Harper has consistently denied any such connection, showing no signs of wavering. The second season of The White Lotus does not delve into exploring the dynamics between these two vacationers who seemed to harbor mutual dislike. Speculation among viewers suggests that perhaps Cameron and Harper shared a kiss, but nothing beyond that, and that Harper may now regret the experience. This is just one of the many theories circulating.
However, the true ambiguity lies in what comes next. Ethan and Harper appear to be content and happy, while Daphne and Cameron go back to their usual routine of keeping secrets and turning a blind eye to each other's actions. Unless the four actors reprise their roles in a future all-stars season of The White Lotus, as hinted by series creator Mike White, we cannot know for certain whether their relationships will endure and if the vacation truly helped strengthen their bond as a foursome.
