Despite speculation that Shakur and Pinkett Smith had a romantic relationship, they were, in fact, incredibly close friends. During the 1990s, Pinkett Smith made appearances in several of the rapper's music videos, such as "Keep Ya Head Up" and "Temptations."

When Shakur faced accusations of sexual abuse in 1995, Pinkett Smith provided him with a $100,000 bond. In a 2003 documentary entitled Tupac: Resurrection, Pinkett Smith candidly spoke about her deep bond with the late rapper, who held a special place as one of her closest friends.

Smith and Pinkett Smith got married in 1997, but their relationship started in 1994 when Smith was still married to his ex-wife, Sheree Zampino. The actor shares a son, Trey, with Zampino, who was born in 1992. Almost two decades later, Pinkett Smith admitted that she regretted getting involved with Smith before his divorce was finalized.

"I didn't fully comprehend the depths of marriage and divorce at that time," she confessed during the debut episode of Red Table Talk in 2018, in which Zampino appeared as a guest. "In hindsight, I probably should have taken a step back."

Despite appearing as one of Hollywood's most formidable couples, Smith and Pinkett Smith encountered various challenges in their relationship. They openly admitted to briefly separating in 2015, during which time Pinkett Smith pursued a romance with Alsina due to the lack of communication between them. However, they eventually reconciled.

In 2022, Smith and Pinkett Smith attended the Oscars, where Smith infamously slapped Chris Rock in response to a joke about his wife's shaved head. Although Smith later apologized to the comedian, he faced severe consequences. He was banned from all Oscars events for 10 years and chose to resign from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Pinkett Smith disclosed in October 2023 that she and Smith had separated in 2016 but opted not to pursue a divorce because they still hold onto hope for their relationship.
