Ulysses, a character from Fallout: New Vegas, possesses an air of enigma despite his limited appearances in the game. While encountering him only once, there are numerous storylines entwined with his character. Initially appearing as the final boss in Fallout: New Vegas' last DLC, Ulysses' backstory unfolds across various locations in the Mojave. He is a man shrouded in secrecy, serving as a captivating contrast to the main protagonist, the Courier.
Interestingly, Ulysses is not introduced until the Lonesome Road DLC of Fallout: New Vegas, leading players who only have the base game to remain oblivious to his existence. However, encountering Ulysses leaves a lasting impression. He is a figure of intrigue, frequently discussing history and symbolism with a lecturing tone. Having distanced himself from the Mojave's factions, Ulysses is laser-focused on his personal objectives, rendering him a solitary individual that perfectly aligns with the theme of the Lonesome Road DLC. Additionally, his exceptional S.P.E.C.I.A.L. statistics underscore his formidable stature within the wasteland.
Ulysses' Dark Past in Fallout: New Vegas Adds Dimension to His Plotting
In the Divide, where the notorious and deadly Deathclaws of Fallout reside, Ulysses can be found. Surprisingly, the Deathclaws are one of the less threatening encounters in this area. While the player can tackle the DLCs in any order, it is strongly recommended to avoid Lonesome Road until reaching the endgame levels due to the extreme difficulty of the Divide. If the player manages to survive and overcome the challenges, they will come face to face with Ulysses, a rival courier who has already ventured through all the other DLC areas, playing a significant role in their development. However, the true plan of Ulysses takes an unexpected turn and surprises many players when they finally have the opportunity to converse with him.
Although Ulysses has spent a considerable amount of time working as a scout for the villains of Fallout: New Vegas, Caesar's Legion, he does not hold any affection for Caesar or his army. In fact, Caesar was responsible for the destruction of Ulysses' former tribe, the Twisted Hairs. Despite this, Ulysses equally despises the NCR, viewing them as inadequate leaders. Ulysses' aspiration was to escape the influence of both factions and seek refuge in a community he discovered in the Divide. Tragically, before he could realize his dream, the Divide was destroyed. Filled with anger, Ulysses devised a plan to retaliate against both the NCR and Legion by launching nuclear strikes, disregarding any potential consequences, and seeking The Courier's assistance in his destructive mission.
Ulysses' past experiences drive him to take extreme measures, partly blaming The Courier for the devastation of the Divide, although he is uncertain of their guilt. It is worth noting that despite his destructive intentions, he is not entirely malevolent. If The Courier can effectively persuade him, he can be dissuaded from his grand scheme, and he even rescues Christine from the machines of the Big MT before the events of Dead Money. This contradictory nature adds depth to his character. While Ulysses is not a hero, his hidden secrets make him a captivating figure. Despite planning one of the bleakest scenarios in Fallout: New Vegas, he avoids becoming a predictable villain. As Ulysses progressively reveals more about his past, players gain insights into the circumstances that shaped his life, even if they may not agree with his plans. Considering he only appears towards the end of a challenging side quest, Ulysses receives a surprisingly detailed portrayal. His presence in Fallout: New Vegas uncovers a significant amount of darkness and contributes to the enigma of the Mojave wasteland.
