Summary
Jonathan Taylor Thomas, or JTT as fans fondly called him, rose to fame as a child star on Home Improvement in the '90s but left the show to focus on his education.
In addition to his television roles, Thomas ventured into the film industry and provided his voice for iconic characters in The Lion King and The Adventures of Pinocchio. Following a hiatus from acting, he made a comeback in 2013 with Last Man Standing, and has since delved into directing while continuing to play an active role in SAG-AFTRA.
Jonathan Taylor Thomas gained popularity in the '90s through his role on Home Improvement, making him one of the most beloved child stars of that era. However, his life after the show has been shrouded in mystery. Prior to Home Improvement, Thomas appeared in The Bradys, a short-lived revival of The Brady Bunch, portraying Greg's son Kevin. Shortly after, he joined Home Improvement as Randy Taylor, becoming a teenage heartthrob and earning the affectionate nickname "JTT" from his adoring fans. However, before the series concluded in 1999, Thomas left for college, controversially deciding not to return for the show's finale.
During his time in the spotlight, Thomas ventured into the world of movies. He is particularly renowned for his voice acting in the classic Disney animated film, The Lion King, where he portrayed the young Simba. Additionally, he lent his voice to the title character in The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996), played Tom Sawyer in Disney's Tom and Huck, and gave a memorable performance in the holiday film, I'll Be Home for Christmas. Towards the end of the '90s, Thomas took a break from acting to pursue higher education, but sporadically appeared on television in the early 2000s. Following this, he was absent from screens from 2005 to 2013 and has not acted since 2015, leaving his fans curious about his whereabouts.
Jonathan Taylor Thomas Returned To Acting in 2013 By Appearing In Last Man Standing
After leaving Home Improvement in 1998, Jonathan Taylor Thomas prioritized his education. He managed to complete high school while still participating in some acting projects. In 2000, he began studying philosophy and history at Harvard University. During his third year in 2002, Thomas studied abroad at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, coinciding with Prince William and Kate Middleton. Despite his academic commitments, he continued to make guest appearances on popular TV shows like Ally McBeal and Smallville. Thomas' last television role, until recently, was in 2005 on Veronica Mars.
Following this, Thomas returned to school to complete his undergraduate degree, this time at Columbia University. After graduating in 2010, he made his comeback to acting in 2013 with a special appearance on Last Man Standing, reuniting with his former Home Improvement co-star, Tim Allen. In the episode, he reprised his recurring character, John Baker, the owner of a restaurant. Thomas later appeared as the character Randy, a nod to his Home Improvement role, in two more episodes of Last Man Standing's third season. Interestingly, in the twelfth episode of Last Man Standing's fourth season, titled "Helen Potts," he humorously made a cameo as Randy, the son of his former sitcom mom Patricia Richardson's character.
What Jonathan Taylor Thomas Has Done Since 2015 (Did He Retire From Acting?)
Jonathan Taylor Thomas's last known acting credit was in 2015 when he appeared on season 4 of Last Man Standing. It is uncertain if he has officially retired from acting in movies and television, but he remains an active member of the actor's union SAG-AFTRA. Since being elected in 2017, Thomas has served on both the organization's National Board and its Los Angeles Local Board, and as of 2023, he still holds these positions (via SAG-AFTRA).
Furthermore, there are indications that Thomas may have aspirations to transition into directing. In addition to his acting role on Last Man Standing, Thomas directed two episodes in season 3 that he did not appear in. He later directed another episode in 2016 for the show's fifth season, fulfilling a desire he expressed in a 1996 interview with Premiere magazine. At the age of 13, Thomas expressed his hope to join the Directors Guild of America and become a director one day (via JTTArchive.net). Interestingly, although Thomas had the opportunity to direct Tim Allen on Last Man Standing, Allen never had the chance to direct Thomas, despite having directed episodes of Home Improvement and Last Man Standing.
