Warning: The article contains spoilers for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Director James Mangold reveals that Indiana Jones may continue his adventures despite being 70 years old. In the latest installment of the franchise, Harrison Ford's portrayal of the iconic character embarks on a final quest. However, the movie concludes with Indy retrieving his fedora from a clothesline, hinting at the possibility of future escapades and the potential return of Ford's character. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mangold expresses his belief that Indiana's journey is not over yet. Although retired as a teacher, Indiana's retirement as an archaeologist is not confirmed, leaving room for further explorations as he now has more time to devote to what truly matters in his life. Below are his exact statements on the subject:
I don't believe he will ever cease his relentless excavations. As for removing the hat from the clothesline, I believe it's a matter of common sense - hats simply shouldn't be hung on clotheslines. Moreover, I am convinced that he is not finished yet. A conclusion does not imply that the characters cease all movement in their lives. Rather, it signifies a sense of harmony achieved with their narrative. I anticipate that he will awaken tomorrow with an eagerness to pursue something new. However, I highly doubt he will embark on another journey battling time-traveling Nazis. Instead, I can envision him and Marion embarking on a road trip to explore an Inca excavation or perhaps a dig site in Montana or North Dakota, where they would rent a cozy cabin. I can picture him thoroughly reveling in his life as a retired archaeologist. Although he retires as a teacher in Dial of Destiny, I do not believe he will retire his unwavering commitment to learning, contemplating the past and the future, as well as science and humanity. The moment he ceases to ponder these matters, I believe it will be game over.
Will Indiana Jones Ever Return (Even Without Ford)?
Ford has repeated on several occasions that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be his last time portraying the character. However, the conclusion of his latest film allows for different interpretations and hints that his adventures may not be completely over. Although Mangold clarified the final scene by stating that Indiana Jones will always have the spirit of an adventurer, albeit not embarking on grand quests, the closing shot of the movie could suggest that the character may make a comeback in some form. This does not necessarily imply Ford's return, but rather that Indiana Jones may continue to exist through other portrayals.
Lucasfilm has already established in previous films and this one that there are still many untold adventures. Last year, it was announced that the studio was planning an Indiana Jones spinoff series for Disney+, though few details were provided at the time and there have been rumors that the project has been cancelled. If an Indiana Jones series does come to fruition, it wouldn't be the first time, as The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles aired on ABC from 1992 to 1996 and focused on the character's earlier exploits.
In the previous series, Ford appeared as Indiana Jones in one episode, while Corey Carrier and Sean Patrick Flannery portrayed the character during his younger years. If any future Indiana Jones projects were to happen, they wouldn't necessarily need to star Ford, especially if they were to explore a younger period of his life. Despite Ford stating that he was finished playing the character, the latest film, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, hinted that there may be more adventures in store for Indiana Jones.
