In his relentless pursuit to secure his status as the most formidable magic wielder, Karsus ventured to cast a spell of unprecedented magnitude. However, this reckless act resulted in the gradual unraveling of the Weave, bringing forth a catastrophic impending doom for the world. In a selfless act, Mystryl sacrificed herself to spare the world from this dire fate, leading to the loss of the Weave and the eradication of all magic from the realm.

Until she was resurrected as Mystra, bringing magic and the Weave back into the world, this was the situation. Many centuries later, Gale enters the picture. He had met Mystra years before the events of Baldur's Gate 3 and had fallen deeply in love with her. This love sets in motion his own tragic story, one that he himself compares to the ambitious Karsus.

Gale, in an attempt to prove his love for Mystra, seeks to harness some of the power released during the initial tragedy. His goal is to return a lost fragment of Mystra to her. However, he tragically loses control of this power. The lost fragment takes the form of an orb residing inside Gale's chest, turning him into a living bomb. He becomes a threat to anyone who comes near him, no matter how remotely.

If players choose to embrace Gale's rebellious idea of overthrowing Mystra and gaining the power of a goddess, the similarities between Gale and Karsus become apparent. While Gale is generally kind and considerate in his interactions with others, there is a point where he becomes determined to recreate the Crown of Karsus in order to attain immense power. This pursuit involves undertaking a personal quest and delving deeper into the knowledge surrounding the Crown, an incredibly potent artifact that played a significant role in shaping the game's conclusion.

In the hands of a skilled and formidable wizard like Gale, this could potentially lead to another tragic event in the Faerun world, mirroring the consequences of Karsus's actions in the past. Considering that Gale, like Karsus, is a mortal being, employing the artifact to replicate the very actions that once resulted in the disappearance of magic from the world does not suggest a favorable outcome.

The potential success of this idea relies solely on Gale surpassing Karsus' abilities, but there is no evidence to suggest he can. If Gale manages to survive until the end of the game with the orb still inside him, the resulting destruction could surpass what would have occurred if it had been detonated during the game. Karsus' Folly serves as a reminder of the disastrous consequences of hubris, and Gale's Folly would demonstrate a failure to learn from history. It would be in Gale's best interest to move on from his desire for this level of power, as nothing positive can come from usurping a god merely for the sake of it.

Baldur's Gate 3 is now available for PC and will be released on September 6 for PS5. An Xbox Series X/S version is currently in development.
