Meryl Streep, now a Hollywood legend, was almost not cast in The Devil Wears Prada. Here's why. Even though we now all agree she can be in anything she wants, it wasn't always the case.
With the record for the most Academy Award nominations of any actor, having been nominated 21 times since 1978 with the Deer Hunter, and winning three of them, it's surprising that her acting ability was ever doubted. However, her role in the 2006 movie The Devil Wears Prada almost slipped through her fingers. But why?
Why was Meryl Streep almost not cast in The Devil Wears Prada?
Miranda Priestly is arguably one of Streep’s most iconic characters. Allegedly inspired by Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, Streep’s portrayal played a crucial role in popularizing the movie and led to her 14th Oscar nomination.
Despite this, the movie's producer Wendy Finerman revealed that there were reservations about casting Streep. She explained in an interview with the Hollywood Gold podcast, "And Meryl, people thought we were crazy. I mean, I had people call me up and say, 'Are you out of your mind? She’s never been funny a day in her life.'"
"But this was clearly a different kind of role for her," Finerman added, "She has been funny, and they were wrong."
Prior to this, Streep had dabbled in comedies such as A Prairie Home Companion, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, and the beloved cult classic Death Becomes Her. However, Streep was mainly recognized for her compelling dramatic performances in films like Sophie’s Choice and Kramer vs. Kramer, causing some to question her comedic talent.
Streep certainly proved them all wrong. According to Finerman, casting Streep was a delightful element of surprise. The Devil Wears Prada simply wouldn't be the same without her. One standout moment is the unforgettable cerulean sweater monologue. See it for yourself below:
The actor did admit that she didn't enjoy making the movie because it was her first, and only, attempt at method acting. "It was horrible! I was miserable in my trailer," Streep said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "I was so depressed! I said, 'Well, it’s the price you pay for being boss!'"
