Where Was Rick Grimes at the End of The Walking Dead?

Rick's final appearance in the series finale left fans wondering about his fate following the mid-season finale of season 9. After the loss of his son Carl and the successful defeat of the Saviors, Rick and his group now reside peacefully alongside the Oceanside, Sanctuary, and Alexandria communities. Negan, the former leader of the Saviors, is imprisoned within Alexandria.

While the remaining Saviors have embraced peace and contribute to the community's growth, a group from Oceanside holds a deep grudge and seeks revenge by eliminating former members of the Saviors. Rick attempts to resolve the conflict through peaceful means, while Maggie takes matters into her own hands and heads to Alexandria with the intent to kill Negan, the man responsible for her husband Glenn's death.

Intending to maintain peace, Rick is determined to prevent Maggie from executing Negan. Accompanied by Daryl, he travels to Alexandria, only to be redirected by Daryl in order to allow Maggie to fulfill her duty. The two engage in a heated argument before reconciling just as a horde of walkers approaches the nearby communities. Understanding the need to divert the walkers, they decide to split up. Unfortunately, Rick finds himself surrounded and, while riding his horse, he falls, impaling his chest on a rebar jutting out from a cylinder block.

After freeing himself, he perseveres in attempting to divert the approaching walkers. Gradually, his strength wanes until he reaches a bridge laden with explosives. With no more strength to move, Rick waits for the walkers to converge on the bridge. He then ignites the dynamite, causing a massive explosion that obliterates both the walkers and himself. This event is witnessed by the rest of the group, who believe Rick to be dead. However, their assumption is proven wrong when Anne discovers him on the shore and summons a helicopter. In exchange for her departure, she arranges for Rick's rescue by the helicopter.

Following this, Rick does not appear on-screen until the final scene of Season 11. In this scene, he is shown penning a letter to his daughter Judith, presumably some time after being rescued by Anne. After sealing the letter in a bottle, Rick places it into the water. He then prepares a bag containing an etched drawing of Michonne and Judith. As he stands on the shore, he hears the sound of an approaching helicopter, which causes him to panic. In a rush, he tosses the bag onto a nearby boat and surrenders himself to the unidentified individuals aboard the helicopter. Following Rick's supposed demise in season 9, the storyline leaps forward by six years. During this period, the group finds themselves grappling with an alternate band of survivors known as the Whisperers. Led by a woman named Alpha, these individuals camouflage themselves by wearing the flesh of the undead and even employ the undead as their own army. Consequently, the size of their army surpasses any previous encounters faced by the protagonists of the show.

In response to this fresh menace, Michonne decides to take action. She accompanies a man named Virgil to a remote island, where he claims to possess a vast arsenal of weapons that can be utilized by the communities to safeguard themselves. However, Virgil's intentions take a treacherous turn as he betrays Michonne and holds her captive. Not one to be easily subdued, Michonne manages to escape rapidly and compels Virgil to guide her to the location of the weapons.

Virgil escorts her to a storage room where she stumbles upon one of Rick's boots and the bag he had hastily tossed onto the boat. Inside the bag, she discovers a precious drawing portraying herself and Judith. Driven by hope, she abandons Virgil on the island, commandeers a familiar boat (the very same one glimpsed in the series finale beside Rick), and reaches out to Judith via walkie-talkie, sharing the possibility of Rick's survival. Subsequently, she is observed linking up with a massive congregation of survivors traversing the thoroughfares, only to vanish from sight until the momentous series finale.

Michonne has found a settlement with the fellow survivors she joined. She is now equipped with new armor and carries Rick's bag. She assures Judith and RJ in a letter that she is actively searching for their father. Determined and prepared with her katana, Michonne ventures out alone on a horse, confronting a massive herd of walkers.

The scene then shifts between Rick and Michonne to Maggie, Negan, and Daryl, who set off on their own. They repeat the phrase "we are the ones who live". Judith and RJ are also shown overlooking a crop field, sharing the same message. As a result, The Walking Dead concludes, but it marks a fresh start for these characters as they leave Georgia in pursuit of other survivors and, hopefully, answers to the remaining mysteries.
