A therapist has analyzed the popular horror film M3GAN and praised its accurate portrayal of psychology, with one exception. While awaiting updates on M3GAN 2, horror enthusiasts have the opportunity to gain insight into the first film's handling of topics such as childhood grief. Therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright discussed M3GAN's representation of child psychology on the show Cinema Therapy. Decker commended the film for its intelligence, strong storytelling, impressive acting, humor, and accurate portrayal of clinical psychology. However, he did note a minor inaccuracy regarding the movie's depiction of attachment theory. Decker shared his perspective on this matter around the 17:30 mark of the clip.
M3GAN 2 Is Not Being Rushed, And That’s Good News
When she mentions "attachment theory," she discusses how children create new connections with others after losing a parent or primary caregiver. However, her explanation is only loosely linked to actual attachment theory. Attachment theory focuses on the distinction between secure and insecure attachments. She depicts attachment theory as solely pertaining to parental loss, but in reality, it encompasses much more.

The news about M3GAN 2.0, the official sequel to the first film, broke in January while the initial movie was still enjoying its successful run in theaters. However, considering the release date is set for January 17, 2025, it is evident that the sequel will not be arriving in a hurry. Producer Jason Blum, in an interview with Empire Magazine, expressed the importance of not rushing the production process of M3GAN 2.0.
"We need to start working on a script, but it's important to give ourselves adequate time. Rushing the creative process only leads to compromises, even if we pretend otherwise. That's why I wanted to ensure we have enough time to make an exceptional movie. Luckily, we have the whole team returning, so there's no need to hire new writers or directors - they're already on board."
Since the announcement of M3GAN 2.0, there has been a significant development in the ongoing WGA strike, which has caused delays for many important film and television projects. However, Blum and his team wisely postponed the release of M3GAN 2.0 until 2025, potentially in anticipation of the strike. This decision allows director Gerard Johnstone and writers Akela Cooper and James Wan ample time to complete the sequel's script and meet the original release date without feeling rushed. With no time constraints, the writers can invest the same level of care and research into the sequel as they did for the original M3GAN, ensuring its psychological accuracy.
