Niantic has become synonymous with mobile augmented reality (AR) games ever since the release of Pokemon Go in collaboration with Nintendo and The Pokemon Company. The company has since partnered with other notable developers like 2K Games. Currently, Niantic is teaming up with Capcom to bring the popular Monster Hunter franchise to smartphones through Monster Hunter Now. While the mobile hardware may present some limitations, the game will still include core gameplay elements found in the mainline Monster Hunter games, such as Palico assistance, item crafting, and various weapon types. At present, there are six confirmed weapon types available.
The Monster Hunter franchise originated in 2004 and gained immense popularity due to its unique gameplay centered around hunting and capturing creatures, which allows players to obtain valuable materials. These materials can be used to craft and upgrade equipment, as well as gather resources for traps and potions through foraging. Armed with these resources, players can take on progressively stronger and more challenging monsters. While subsequent sequels have improved graphics, introduced quality of life enhancements, and explored different settings and time periods, the core gameplay of the franchise has remained consistent. This holds true for Monster Hunter Now, despite its simplified combat mechanics for mobile devices and incorporation of AR elements.
All the Melee Weapon Types Confirmed for Monster Hunter Now
There are four different melee weapon types available in Monster Hunter that cater to various playstyles:
Sword and Shield: Ideal for players who prefer a balance of offense and defense, the sword and shield allows for quick switching between the two. Additionally, it offers an SP skill called Perfect Rush Combo, which enables a rapid series of slashes.
Great Sword: Designed for patient players seeking to unleash devastating blows, the Great Sword is a larger-than-life weapon capable of toppling even the mightiest Lavientes in Monster Hunter. As the player charges their attack, the blade's damage amplifies. Its formidable special skill, the "True Charged Slash," harnesses the full strength of the character to deliver a single, immensely powerful strike.
Long Sword: Agile warriors who prefer swift maneuvers on the battlefield will find their match in the Long Sword. While its damage output remains moderate, this weapon excels in rapid attacks that enable effortless repositioning. Furthermore, it accumulates a Spirit Gauge with each successful hit, augmenting the player's overall damage. The Long Sword's distinctive skill, the "Spirit Helm Breaker," propels the character skyward, unleashing a devastating, sword-wielding assault upon the monster unlucky enough to receive the impact.
All the Ranged Weapon Types Confirmed for Monster Hunter Now
Bludgeon: Renowned for its raw power, the bludgeon is an ideal choice for those who relish the unrefined might of a blunt implement over a meticulously honed blade. With its awe-inspiring skill, aptly named "Spinning Bludgeon," players transform into a tempestuous vortex, culminating in a forceful upper assault.
Monster Hunter Now also offers weapons for players who like to deal damage from afar:
Light Bowgun: Ideal for players who enjoy maneuvering and attacking from a distance, thanks to its rapid rate of fire. With various types of bullets available, players can choose the most effective one depending on the opponent they are facing. The weapon showcases a unique skill named "Wyvernblast Counter," allowing users to launch an exploding bullet that inflicts substantial damage on the targeted monsters.
Bow: The traditional bow and arrow excel in medium-range combat. Comparable to the Great Sword, players must charge their attack for maximum impact. However, the bow's charging mechanism consists of four levels, each unlocking a different arrow type. A standout feature of this weapon is its "Dragon Piercer" skill, enabling the user to shoot an arrow capable of piercing even the toughest hides and scales, causing significant harm to both monsters and the entities standing behind them.
Monster Hunter Now offers a variety of weapon types that cater to different playstyles. From the deliberate and powerful great sword and bow to the agile and rapid long sword and light bowgun, players have a range of options to choose from. While the specific weapons within each type have not been disclosed, updates on the available weaponry may be revealed prior to the game's launch. Monster Hunter Now is scheduled to be released on September 14, 2023, for mobile devices.
