The Hashira are the backbone of the Demon Slayer Corps, providing the organization with its strength and serving as its most powerful warriors. As their name suggests, they are the "pillars" upon which the corps relies. Among all the characters in Demon Slayer, the Hashira are widely considered to be the most skilled combatants, and they have played a critical role in humanity's ongoing battle against the demons.
Without the Hashira, society would be at far greater risk of being overrun by the Demon King Muzan Kibutsuji and his minions. In fact, many of the Hashira are so powerful that they are on par with the Twelve Kizuki, the most formidable demons who report directly to Muzan.
In addition to their raw strength, the Hashira also hold significant authority within the corps. They are the highest-ranking members after the leader of the corps, and they have the power to command all other members. Each Hashira is assigned a particular region to patrol, where they are responsible for gathering information on demon activities and launching offensives against them as needed.
Because of their immense power and expertise, the Hashira are often sent on missions that exceed the capabilities of lower-ranking members. They may also be called upon to supervise less experienced members of the corps on certain assignments. For example, in the Mugen Train and Entertainment District Arcs of Demon Slayer, Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke were accompanied by the Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku and the Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui, respectively.
Who Are The Hashira?
Selected from the ranks of elite Demon Slayers, the Hashira each possess their own unique Breathing Style. While some adhere to the more traditional elemental routes, others have developed their own variants, such as Serpent Breathing, Stone Breathing, Sound Breathing, Insect Breathing, or Love Breathing. Most wield Nichirin swords, with the color of their blade corresponding to their Breathing Style. However, some, like Gyomei and Uzui, make use of alternative weapons, such as a flail and axe or a pair of massive Nichirin cleavers, respectively. Each Hashira's weapon bears the phrase "Destroyer of Demons" and a unique symbol on their hand that corresponds to their Breathing Style.
In addition to their unique abilities, Hashira are compensated far more generously than any other rank, being paid whatever sums they desire. Their monstrous strength grants them autonomy within the ranks, and they are likely able to retire at any age. Only the upper ranks of the Twelve Kizuki can hold a candle to their might. Throughout the series, the Hashira have displayed feats that far exceed the capabilities of the average Demon Slayer, such as moving faster than the eye can see, dispatching hordes of demons with ease, and going toe-to-toe with the strongest of Muzan's lieutenants.
The Hashira are a group of elite Demon Slayers who have proven their strength and dedication in battling demons. Many of them have experienced personal loss at the hands of demons, which fuels their determination to protect humanity. Others, like Rengoku, were born into the tradition and have trained their entire lives to become Hashira. Despite their different backgrounds and personalities, they all share a deep commitment to their duties and hold themselves and their fellow Hashira to the highest standards. The path to becoming a Hashira is long and difficult, and only a select few are able to achieve this honor.
To be considered for a Hashira position, a candidate must overcome significant challenges through one of two routes. The first option is to achieve a kill count of 50 demons while ranked as a Kinoe, which is the highest rank in the Demon Slayer Corps, second only to the Hashira themselves. Alternatively, they can slay one of the Twelve Kizuki in combat. Both of these conditions require elite levels of swordsmanship that only a select few Demon Slayers can attain. The second route is available only to exceptionally talented Demon Slayers who become designated successors to certain Hashira, earning the title of Tsuguko. Candidates can either apply or get scouted by one of the current Hashira, and they will only be able to ascend to the rank of Hashira once their predecessor dies or retires, leaving the position vacant. Generally, it takes at least five years of intense training, if not more, to complete either of these routes. However, there have been exceptions such as Muichiro Tokito and Gyomei Himejima, who became the current Mist and Stone Hashiras respectively, in a matter of months.
Hashira Training is a rigorous program that includes special sessions for lower ranked members of the corps. Each Hashira oversees a specific part of the training regimen, which focuses on the all-round development of Demon Slayers of all classes. The sessions are grueling and often described as a never-ending trip to hell by many in the corps. Endurance, flexibility, agility, sword skills, strength, and muscle reinforcement are all areas of focus. To elevate their own abilities, Hashira are required to participate in each other's training sessions and are constantly attacked by wave upon wave of juniors.
