The Raid on Onigashima in the Wano Country Arc of One Piece saw the formation of the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance. This powerful group, consisting of three crews from the Worst Generation, Mink soldiers from the Mokomo Dukedom, samurai affiliated with the Kozuki Family, the yakuza, and other samurai from across Wano, united to combat the Beasts Pirates and the Big Mom Pirates.
Through their determination and bravery, the alliance successfully defeated the combined forces of Kaido and Kurozumi Orochi, liberating the people of Wano from their tyrannical rule. For years, Kaido and Orochi had exploited Wano's resources, enslaved its population, and polluted its natural environment. This injustice had persisted since the death of Kozuki Oden and the overthrow of the Kozuki Family.
By emerging victorious against the two Emperors of the Sea and their crews, Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hats, along with their alliance, reshaped the power dynamics in the world of One Piece. This momentous event marked the beginning of the story's Final Saga.
Why Was The Alliance Formed?
Initially, the alliance formed between the Straw Hat Pirates and Heart Pirates, led by Trafalgar D. Water Law, united to take down Kaido on Punk Hazard. However, Law's true mission was to defeat the Warlord Donquixote Doflamingo. During their time on Punk Hazard, they encountered Foxfire Kin'emon, a former member of the Nine Red Scabbards and a retainer of Kozuki Oden, along with Oden's son, Kozuki Momonosuke. The two had been sent 20 years into the future by Oden's wife, Kozuki Toki, during the destruction of Oden Castle.
A crucial part of the alliance between the Straw Hat and Heart Pirates was the abduction of Caesar Clown, in order to provoke both Doflamingo and Kaido. The scientist possessed the skills to create Artificial Devil Fruits known as SMILEs, which both Doflamingo and Kaido required. Upon reaching Dressrosa, which had fallen under Doflamingo's control, the group dismantled the SMILE factory and emerged victorious against the Warlord. They then set sail for Zou. It was on the island of Zou, home to the Mink Tribe, that the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance was officially established. Momonosuke requested the assistance of the pirates in his mission to free Wano from the clutches of Kaido and Orochi.
The Raid On Onigashima
Luffy, Nami, Chopper, and Brook embarked on a mission to Whole Cake Island in order to rescue Sanji. Sanji had been taken to the island as part of a forced marriage arrangement with Charlotte Pudding, orchestrated by the Vinsmoke Family to establish an alliance with the Big Mom Pirates. At the same time, Zoro, Usopp, Robin, Franky, Law's Heart Pirates, and the samurai set out for Wano to prepare for their upcoming attack against Orochi.
Despite his initial defeat and subsequent imprisonment in Wano's Udon region, Luffy's alliance remained determined to overthrow Kaido. They gathered support and devised strategies while Luffy honed his skills for the upcoming battle against the powerful emperor. Along the way, Luffy also encountered Eustass Kid from the Kid Pirates, who reluctantly joined forces with the alliance. Having also suffered defeat and imprisonment at the hands of Kaido, Kid became a valuable ally in their mission to take down the formidable enemy.
The alliance eventually decided to launch their attack on Kaido's fortress in Onigashima during the Fire Festival in the Flower Capital of Wano. This event was chosen because it would be a grand celebration for Kaido's alliance with Big Mom, providing an opportune time for the raid. As the battle unfolded, Kanjuro, a member of the Kurozumi family and secretly working for Orochi, betrayed the Nine Red Scabbards by kidnapping Momonosuke.
On the other hand, X-Drake, one of Kaido's Tobiroppo, turned against the Beasts Pirates and joined forces with the alliance. He revealed himself as a former Marine Rear Admiral and the leader of the covert unit SWORD, having abandoned his position within the navy to infiltrate Kaido's ranks. In addition, former Whitebeard Pirates Izou and Marco also lent their strength to the alliance, along with Kaido's own son, Yamato, who played a pivotal role in the plan to overthrow his father.
In the epic conclusion of the raid, Trafalgar Law and Eustass Kid joined forces to defeat the formidable Big Mom, while the Straw Hats emerged victorious against Kaido's loyal followers. Zoro and Sanji triumphed over King and Queen respectively, delivering impressive defeats. Finally, Luffy emerged as the ultimate victor by overpowering Kaido himself. With his newfound ability to unleash Gear 5 and his awakened Devil Fruit, Luffy revealed his Mythical Zoan form known as the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika.
Disbandment And Legacy
The alliance's resounding triumph served as a fatal blow to the Beasts Pirates' tyrannical rule in Wano and put an end to Kaido's New Onigashima Project. Consequently, power was successfully restored to Momonosuke, the legitimate shogun descended from the illustrious Kozuki Family. This momentous victory fulfilled Oden's dying wish for his loyal retainers to overthrow Kaido, granting the Kozuki Family and their supporters the long-awaited vengeance they had fervently pursued for two decades. Moreover, it reaffirmed that the noble sacrifices made by Oden, Toki, and numerous others had not been in vain.
In addition, the alliance's triumph signaled the commencement of the prophecy that Oden had learned during his visit to Laugh Tale with the Roger Pirates. The newly appointed shogun, Momonosuke, vowed to restore Wano to its former glory and unified the people in support of his cause. Luffy, in his humility, requested Momonosuke to keep his involvement anonymous, resulting in him being recognized across the land as "Joy Boy." Luffy and Buggy took the places of Kaido and Big Mom among the Four Emperors of the Sea, ushering in a new era. The Straw Hats, along with Kid and Law, witnessed significant increases in their bounties, reflecting the pivotal roles they played in the raid. Having achieved their objectives, the alliance disbanded, and each crew from the Worst Generation went their separate ways, while the citizens of Wano commenced the process of rebuilding their nation.
