Summary
Good Omens season 2 continues to honor Terry Pratchett's voice and legacy, with his former assistant directly involved in its development.
Neil Gaiman gives importance to ensuring that Pratchett's voice resonates in the scripts, while also incorporating a clear storyline for Aziraphale and Crowley.
The series is abundant with concealed references and Easter eggs, serving as a tribute to Pratchett. These include his depiction and subtle acknowledgments of his Discworld novels.
Terry Pratchett's former personal assistant and official "representative on Earth" has explained how Good Omens season 2 pays tribute to the late author. Pratchett, widely acclaimed for his Discworld novels, collaborated with Neil Gaiman in 1990 to create the original book, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. This book served as the foundation for the successful 2019 season 1 adaptation of Good Omens. Unfortunately, Pratchett passed away in 2015 before witnessing the novel's transformation into a best-selling TV series.
In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Rob Wilkins, who now fulfills the role of Pratchett's "representative on Earth," divulged that the second season of Good Omens carries on from Gaiman and Pratchett's initial collaboration while still maintaining the essence of the late author's voice. Wilkins, who actively participated in the development of season 2, regularly communicated with Gaiman throughout the scripting process. Moreover, he hinted that the show is building towards a definite story arc envisioned by Gaiman and Pratchett back in 1990. Read his remarks below:
"I am not here to ensure Terry's voice is heard, as Terry's voice is already present and pervasive. My mere presence embodies Terry and that is what I contribute to the set.
"He would take great pride in the intricacy and the passion that is infused into this production, which everyone wholeheartedly invests in. It is truly heartwarming to witness the profound respect for the written word, and how we are transforming it into a tangible creation."
Neil ensures that Terry's voice is heard daily through the scripts, which is absolutely remarkable. During the script-writing process leading up to production, I have frequent conversations with Neil to discuss his work and provide insights into the direction of the story and narrative.
In the early 1990s, Neil and Terry meticulously planned out the storyline in a hotel room in Seattle. Although I cannot reveal too many details, as Neil would playfully threaten to harm me, there is definitely a well-defined story arc for Aziraphale and Crowley that we must see through until the very end.
The Hidden Terry Pratchett Easter Eggs in Good Omens Season 2
In Good Omens, there are numerous hidden references and Easter eggs that have caught the attention of keen-eyed viewers. Season 1 already paid homage to Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman's original writing partner, by featuring Pratchett's iconic hat and scarf hanging in Aziraphale's bookshop. Season 2 carries on this tradition by including several new references to the beloved fantasy author.
One notable Easter egg in season 2, episode 2, is the surreptitious appearance of Pratchett's first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic. Another significant reference is a depiction of Pratchett himself dressed as the Witchfinder General, hanging on the wall of the Dirty Donkey pub. Furthermore, both Pratchett's and Gaiman's names can be found among the graffiti in the Give Me Coffee Or Give Me Death coffee shop, along with subtle nods to famous Discworld characters. Additionally, when Donna Preston's character, Mrs. Sandwich, repeatedly declares herself a "seamstress," it directly alludes to Discworld's Seamstresses' Guild, which is a euphemism for prostitutes within the world of Discworld.
Good Omens season 2 has received significant praise, leading many viewers to agree with Wilkins' statement that Pratchett would be highly proud of Gaiman's work on the show. Gaiman has not only successfully honored Pratchett's work but has also effectively captured the distinctive comedic voice of his former collaborator. Hopefully, Prime Video will soon announce the renewal of Good Omens for season 3, allowing Gaiman to bring the planned story between the pair to its intended conclusion.
