Villains play a crucial role in video games, just like the heroes that players usually control. Without a compelling villain who constantly strives to conquer the world or commit evil deeds, the storyline of a game can feel lacking.
Ubisoft, a renowned game developer, has created numerous captivating games with intriguing narratives and characters, featuring some of the most unforgettable villains in the gaming industry. With successful franchises like Far Cry and Assassin's Creed, Ubisoft has produced an abundance of exceptional villains. However, among all these villains, a select few stand out as the absolute best.
8 Umbra (Child Of Light)
Umbra, also known as the Dark Queen, is depicted as the main antagonist in the platforming role-playing game Child of Light. Throughout the game, she is portrayed as a ruthless ruler who governs her kingdom through fear, forcing her subjects to obey her commands. Additionally, Umbra possesses immense power acquired by stealing the sun, moon, and stars.
Her character is portrayed as highly dangerous, as she goes as far as attempting to poison the game's protagonist, Aurora, even before her birth. This vendetta stems from Umbra's mother being exiled by Aurora's own mother. Despite Aurora's ignorance of this fact, Umbra persists in her relentless pursuit to eliminate her.
7 Mr Dark (Rayman)
Mr Dark, the infamous shape-shifting villain, has consistently made his presence felt throughout the Rayman series, establishing himself as the arch-nemesis of the beloved protagonist. Ubisoft's successful franchise, Rayman, has garnered a dedicated following over the years, and Mr Dark's relentless return has played a significant role in captivating the audience.
With each game, Mr Dark continues to wreak havoc, often resorting to kidnapping individuals, like Betilla the Fairy in the original Rayman title. There are no redeeming qualities to this villain, as his actions consistently lead to various issues and challenges for Rayman to overcome. However, it is precisely this constant threat and his impressive ability to transform that make him an intriguing adversary to confront. His numerous transformations serve as a testament to his formidable power, ensuring that the battles against him are always intense and captivating.
6 Deimos (Assassin's Creed: Odyssey)
Throughout the Assassin's Creed franchise, the series has become renowned for its captivating narratives, and this is particularly evident in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. Within this installment, players will frequently clash with Deimos, a prominent antagonist.
Deimos is portrayed as a formidable weapon, manipulated by the Cult of Kosmos to carry out their destructive desires. As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Deimos is actually the protagonist's sibling, potentially evoking sympathy from players despite their newfound propensity for violence. Although guiding Deimos towards redemption may initially seem like an insurmountable challenge, players may ultimately succeed in setting them on the right path.
5 Faith Seed (Far Cry 5)
Out of all the members of the Seed family, Faith Seed stands out as one of the most intriguing. Despite not being blood-related to Joseph Seed, she seamlessly fits into the family dynamic.
Initially, Faith comes across as amiable and welcoming. However, her true nature is revealed through her manipulation of others using the mind-altering substance called Bliss. As the player resists her demands, her once innocent demeanor turns malevolent, exposing an even more sinister side to her character. This unveils the extent of Faith's dangerous capabilities.
4 Douglas Shetland (Splinter Cell)
Sam Fisher, the protagonist of the Splinter Cell franchise, has come across numerous intriguing villains throughout the series. However, none of them leave as lasting an impression on players as Sam's long-time friend, Douglas Shetland.
The personal connection between Sam and Douglas, stemming from their friendship, intensifies the player's drive to hunt down Douglas. This is further enhanced by their shared desire to serve their country. Nevertheless, a major obstacle arises in the form of Douglas' questionable methods and corrupt nature, which not only undermine their common goals but also escalate tensions between nations. Ultimately, the player is compelled to eliminate him.
3 Claudia Wolf (Silent Hill 3)
Raised as a member of The Order, Claudia Wolf's upbringing in the cult residing in Silent Hill may have influenced her actions and mindset. Despite being brainwashed into believing in the purification of the world, her actions in Silent Hill 3 still disturb players. Claudia assumes the role of the high priestess of The Order, aiming to succeed where Dahlia failed in the original Silent Hill. Her pursuit of creating love and affection through pain and sacrifice establishes her as a prominent antagonist, although some players may admire her conviction in shouldering the responsibility of shaping such a world.
2 Haytham Kenway (Assassin's Creed 3)
However, despite his conflicting relationship with Conner, Haytham remains an intriguing character that stands out among other villains in the Assassin's Creed franchise. Unlike previous ruthless antagonists, Haytham conducts himself differently, which may elicit some sympathy from players. Nevertheless, as a Templar, he opposes Conner's goals and the Assassin's, leading him to make the drastic decision of attempting to kill his own son in order to prevent the implementation of Conner's methods for achieving peace.
1 Vaas Montenegro (Far Cry 3)
Vaas, the main antagonist in Far Cry 3, stands out as one of Ubisoft's most remarkable villains, joining the ranks of other iconic characters like Faith Seed. He has captured the hearts of the Far Cry community to the extent that many players even consider him superior to the game's main villain. Right from the start, Vaas captivates players with his unpredictable nature, toying with the protagonist, Jason, and showcasing his terrifying acts as a ruthless pirate throughout the game.
