Netflix's live-action One Piece trailer seems to favor one character over the other in the ongoing Zoro vs. Sanji debate. One Piece's popularity stems from its diverse and unique characters, each with their own distinct qualities. While the anime has already reached over 1,000 episodes, the live-action adaptation will revisit the iconic character dynamics from the early arcs of the series.
As a result, this revival of the beloved series has reignited various fan debates and discussions, including the Zoro vs. Sanji debate. The live-action One Piece trailer subtly suggests that the show may take a stance on this divisive topic.
Netflix's One Piece Is Making Zoro Way More Important Than Sanji
Netflix’s
One Piece
trailer strongly suggests that Zoro will be more important than Sanji in the upcoming live-action show, at least initially. In terms of marketing, the
One Piece
trailer is heavily focused on Zoro. Zoro has a couple of cool lines in the
One Piece
trailer, not to mention how two Zoro fighting scenes were shown. Apart from Luffy, who is
One Piece
’s main character and would obviously dominate the first
One Piece
trailer, Zoro was the character to receive the most attention in this first promotional material.
Sanji, on the other hand, had minimal screen time in the One Piece trailer. The up-and-coming Straw Hat chef didn't have any dialogue in the trailer and only briefly appeared alongside Luffy in a fleeting underwater scene. While the first trailer may not provide much insight, it's evident that One Piece's marketing has primarily focused on Zoro rather than Sanji. Despite this, both the original One Piece manga and anime do a commendable job of giving each character their fair share of the spotlight.
Sanji & Zoro Should Be Equals In The One Piece TV Show
Netflix’s live-action One Piece show should not favor either Sanji or Zoro in the ongoing fan debate. It is crucial that both characters receive equal screen time and are portrayed as equally significant to the overall storyline. Admittedly, Zoro is introduced earlier than Sanji in the One Piece anime, making his first appearance in episode 1 while Sanji debuts in episode 20. However, considering that the Netflix adaptation plans to cover the East Blue Saga in just eight episodes, it is likely that Sanji will be introduced much sooner in the live-action series.
Hence, there is no justification for giving preferential treatment to Zoro over Sanji in the marketing campaign for One Piece leading up to its premier on August 31, 2023. Adapting One Piece into an eight-episode series presents the challenge of condensing the storyline. Consequently, viewers may have limited exposure to each character in the live-action show compared to the One Piece anime or manga. Therefore, Netflix's One Piece should promptly introduce and establish its main characters, particularly in the trailers, catering to those who are unfamiliar with the franchise.
