Warning: Spoilers ahead for the premiere episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, titled "Twovix". The fourth season of Star Trek: Lower Decks kicked off with an endearing and comedic tribute to Star Trek: Voyager in the episode "Twovix". The episode saw the return of some well-known adversaries from the Voyager's holodeck. Ensigns Brad Boimler, Beckett Mariner, and Sam Rutherford were tasked with assisting a museum caretaker in navigating the USS Voyager back to Earth for a new exhibition, in hopes of earning a promotion. However, their mission was far from smooth, as they encountered unique threats like the sentient macro viruses and Tuvix orchids. The transportation of these orchids led to Captain Carol Freeman dealing with a Tuvix conundrum onboard the USS Cerritos. Determined not to repeat Captain Janeway's controversial solution to the Tuvix situation, Freeman allowed things to spiral out of control until Ensign D'Vana Tendi and Provisional Ensign T'Lyn discovered a more humane resolution. As if dealing with infected macro viruses and the return of Tuvix wasn't enough, the Cerritos' Voyager mission also awakened three holographic villains from Star Trek: Voyager, who promptly took control of the legendary starship and set a course for Borg space.
The Clown
The Clown, played by Michael McKean, was a sadistic prankster who represented the fears of five interconnected individuals on the Kohr settlement's neural network. In the Star Trek: Voyager episode "The Thaw," Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) and Lt. B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson) found themselves trapped in the Clown's domain after responding to a distress call. The Clown cruelly tormented Kim, exploiting his fears and traumatic memories for his own sadistic pleasure, while the Voyager crew desperately attempted to rescue him without falling into the same trap.
Ultimately, Captain Janeway entered the Clown's domain as a hologram and skillfully negotiated the release of Kim and the remaining individuals before shutting down the neural network. Unfortunately, it seems that Janeway inadvertently brought a residue of the Clown with her when establishing the holographic connection. This would explain his sudden reappearance on board Voyager as Boimler and Mariner struggled to navigate the ship towards Star Trek: Picard's Starfleet Museum. However, this time, the reign of terror imposed by the Clown seems to have been permanently vanquished, as the Lower Deckers successfully defeated him and his two accomplices.
Doctor Chaotica
In Star Trek: Voyager's season 5 premiere, "Night", Doctor Chaotica (portrayed by Martin Rayner) served as the primary antagonist in the holonovel titled The Adventures of Captain Proton, conceived by Lt. Tom Paris (played by Robert Duncan McNeill). This holonovel provided Tom with a much-needed distraction during the arduous journey through a starless region of space. Inspired by 1950s science fiction adventure serials such as Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, Chaotica's scenes were visually depicted in black and white, which explains his monochromatic appearance in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4.
As the quintessential cliché science fiction villain, Doctor Chaotica's ultimate goal was to conquer the universe, showcasing his megalomania in the episode "Twovix". In a particularly memorable installment of Star Trek's holodeck adventures, Captain Janeway herself portrayed the character of Arachnia, also known as "The Bride of Chaotica". This episode was widely regarded as one of the best holodeck episodes in the Star Trek series. In this particular storyline, a group of subspace aliens mistakenly believed that the holodeck simulation was real, adding an amusing twist to the plot. Unfortunately, Arachnia did not make an appearance in the season 4 premiere of Star Trek: Lower Decks. Nevertheless, Boimler had the opportunity to assume the role of Captain Proton's son, effectively diverting Chaotica's attention from Rutherford's clever "Neelix cheese" solution.
Michael Sullivan
Michael Sullivan, portrayed by Fintan McKeown, was a romantic interest of Captain Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager. He appeared in the sixth season episode titled "Fair Haven". Similar to Doctor Chaotica, Michael was a creation of Tom Paris, who created a holographic Irish town called Fair Haven as a refuge for the Voyager crew. Janeway was immediately drawn to the local bartender, but their potential romance was complicated when Michael's wife Frannie, played by Jan Claire, arrived on the scene. Determined to take control of the situation, Janeway made modifications to the simulation by removing Michael's wife, essentially creating her perfect partner. Ultimately, with the help of the Doctor, played by Robert Picardo, Janeway realized her mistake and restored Michael to his original programming.
However, Janeway's connection with Michael Sullivan did not end there. She later had to intervene when he and the other residents of Fair Haven became self-aware. This was a result of a malfunction in the perceptual filters, causing the townspeople to perceive Tom Paris and Ensign Harry Kim, portrayed by Garrett Wang, as demonic entities. After Janeway and Michael managed to calm everyone down, the holodeck program was temporarily shut down for maintenance. However, in the season 4 premiere of Star Trek: Lower Decks, it appears that the program was not properly fixed, as evidenced by the condition in which Mariner discovers the Michaels.
