Warning! This article contains spoilers for Ahsoka episode 7.
Summary
Shin's future in the Star Wars franchise is uncertain because her past and motivations have been shrouded in mystery.
In
Ahsoka
episode 7, Shin's fighting style is less savage and purposeful, indicating her confusion and distraction.
Ahsoka anticipates the possibility of Shin's redemption and offers her assistance, laying the groundwork for a potential alliance in their battle against Thrawn and the new Empire. Ahsoka episode 7 hints at the potential for a redemption arc for Shin Hati, a fresh addition to the Ahsoka show portrayed by Ivanna Sakhno. Shin, who serves as the apprentice to Dark Jedi and mercenary Baylan Skoll (played by Ray Stevenson), has been a constant thorn in the side of Mandalorian and Jedi-in-training Sabine Wren (portrayed by Natasha Liu Bordizzo) throughout the series. Despite Shin Hati's enigmatic backstory and motivations, her future in the Star Wars franchise remains wide open.
The nature of Shin's relationship with her master, specifically, remains elusive. Baylan possesses his own personal motives, and it is uncertain if Shin is a factor in his agenda. Consequently, if Baylan and Shin were to diverge, would she be capable of envisioning a new direction for herself? Could she experience redemption and transform her loyalty? Ahsoka episode 7, titled "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness," subtly alludes to this potential.
5 Shin Never Understood Baylan's Agenda
In the recent episodes of Ahsoka, Baylan has expressed that he has a distinct agenda for accompanying Morgan Elsbeth to another galaxy. His intention is not to save Thrawn, although he does believe that the Grand Admiral can restore the Empire to its former strength in the primary Star Wars galaxy. In episode 6, he informed Shin that he envisions her becoming more than just a Bokken Jedi – a Jedi who received training in the wilderness after the Order's downfall. However, in episode 7, he persuades her to pursue Sabine and Ezra Bridger on her own, urging her to defeat them and establish her rightful position within the new Empire.
Baylan never fully discloses his plans to Shin, only revealing information that he believes is necessary for her at a particular moment. It is evident that he wants no involvement with the impending Empire, as he has mentioned being influenced by a different force on Peridea. So what does this mean for Shin? Without Baylan's guidance, she feels completely adrift. She desires power, but will the Empire genuinely grant it to her? Furthermore, her training is not yet complete. While she possesses skill with a lightsaber, she lacks Baylan's finesse and fluidity. She has not yet reached her maximum potential, but her master might be abandoning her to her own devices.
4 Shin Didn't Fight With The Same Savagery In Ahsoka Episode 7
3 Ahsoka Believes Shin Can Be Redeemed
Shin's fighting style in the Ahsoka show can only be described as savage. Her swings are forceful and untamed, forsaking the acrobatics typically associated with the Jedi in favor of raw strength and relentless aggression. This particular approach to combat has proven successful in her previous triumph over Sabine, and it is evident in moments during the seventh episode of Ahsoka, such as when she forcefully pushes Ezra against one of the Noti's pods and when she briefly engages in combat with Ahsoka (played by Rosario Dawson). However, there is a noticeable difference in Shin's demeanor – it is clear that her thoughts are elsewhere, likely pondering why her master chose to abandon her. Consequently, her strikes lack their usual intensity, and her movements lack purpose. In Ahsoka episode 7, it becomes evident that even Ahsoka herself noticed Shin's uncertainty. Ahsoka effortlessly parries some of Shin's attacks, and when Thrawn's forces start retreating, Shin hesitates and stops fighting. She stands out in this situation as the stormtroopers are not under her command, while Ahsoka, Sabine, and Ezra present a united front. The ambiguity and anxiety on her face are obvious. Witnessing this, Ahsoka offers her assistance, following the true Jedi way, by extending an olive branch to an uncertain foe. Though Shin rejects Ahsoka's kind offer, the seed has been planted, and amidst the upcoming chaos of Thrawn's return to the Star Wars galaxy, Shin may seek out Ahsoka.
2 Shin Doesn't Know Where She Belongs
After the events of Ahsoka episode 7, Shin finds herself completely alone without Baylan by her side. All she possesses now is her trusty lightsaber, a Howler to ride, and an uncertain path ahead. She can't even be certain if she will be able to return to her own galaxy. So, what does this mean for Shin? She yearns for power, but lacks the means to attain it. As a Force-user with no remaining teachers, she is unsure of where she truly belongs. However, she has come to realize that she may find a sense of belonging with Ahsoka, and even Sabine and Ezra.
Undoubtedly, Shin feels a tinge of pride and it will be difficult for her to let go of the future she once believed was her destiny. Yet, the feeling of belonging holds a formidable power, and Shin is unwaveringly loyal to her master. If he were to abandon her for greater power, using her as a mere pawn in his plans, she might be tempted to switch sides and seek redemption. This could potentially lead her to assist in the inevitable battle against Thrawn and the new Empire.
1 Can Sabine Reach Shin When Ahsoka Couldn't?
Shin's yearning for companionship and feeling of not fitting in paralleled the journey of Ben Solo/Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. He was susceptible to corruption because he believed his parents and uncle had abandoned him, but ultimately, he embraced the light side of the Force because he found solace in someone who believed in him—specifically, Rey. It is plausible that Ahsoka, or even Sabine, could provide the same guiding influence for Shin.
If Ahsoka fails to contact Shin in episode 7, there's a chance that Sabine will take the initiative. Despite their opposing sides, Sabine and Shin share many similarities. Both are undergoing training to become Force-wielders in a galaxy where the Jedi, Sith, and Inquisitors are nearly extinct. Additionally, their undying loyalty and ability to tap into their anger for strength provide common ground for potential learning experiences.
According to Huyang, Sabine is not the ideal candidate for a Jedi. Similarly, Shin does not align with the Sith or the Inquisitors; rather, she is a Dark Jedi with incomplete training. Despite their differences, there is a strong undercurrent of rivalry and jealousy in their relationship. Now that Sabine has been reunited with Ezra and knows that Ahsoka has survived her duel with Baylan, they have the opportunity to start fresh. In the event that Thrawn returns and the Empire attempts to rise again, Sabine, Ahsoka, Ezra, Hera, and the rest of the New Republic will require as many allies as possible.
