Warning! Spoilers ahead for Secret Invasion. In a specific scene in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a hint is dropped about an Avenger being replaced by a Skrull in the Secret Invasion storyline. After spending years working on SABER, Nick Fury returns to Earth only to find that the world is still in danger of being invaded by shape-shifting aliens, unbeknownst to humanity. Gravik and his followers, frustrated with Fury and Captain Marvel's inability to find a new home for the Skrulls, take matters into their own hands and slowly start to take over Earth.
What makes the Skrulls formidable antagonists is their ability to change forms, making them nearly undetectable. As part of Gravik's plan, influential individuals are gradually abducted and replaced by Skrulls, allowing them to control the narrative for their own benefit. In episode 4 of Secret Invasion, titled "Beloved," it is revealed that Rhodey, an Avenger, has been replaced by a Skrull. However, due to the many twists and turns in the story, the exact moment of his replacement is not fully explored, leaving fans curious.
Rhodey's "New World" Scene In Falcon & The Winter Soldier Hinted He Was A Skrull
Kevin Feige has implied that Rhodey has been a Skrull for a longer period than originally believed. Marvel Studios wants fans to revisit his previous appearances and try to determine when he was substituted. Many speculate that he was not replaced prior to Avengers: Endgame, considering the significance it holds for Iron Man. It would undermine the emotional impact of Tony Stark's death if Rhodey, who might have always been a Skrull unrelated to Gravik, were absent during the scene.
It is probable that Rhodey underwent the transformation during the Multiverse Saga, given his participation in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Though his appearance was brief, his conversation with Sam Wilson regarding relinquishing the shield sets the stage for future developments in the series. Additionally, it suggests that he was already a Skrull at that time. Rhodey's discussion of blurred lines between allies and enemies aligns with the Skrulls' agenda. Before parting ways with Sam, he cryptically stated, "it's a new day, brother," further implying the alien's intentions to conquer Earth.
Why The Skrulls Wanted Sam Wilson To Be Captain America
If Rhodey was indeed a Skrull in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it is intriguing why he subtly encouraged Sam to become the new Captain America. Now that we know about their Secret Invasion scheme, it doesn't make sense for Gravik to want the Avengers involved, as it would complicate their plans. Perhaps their intention is to lure the Earth's Mightiest Heroes out, making it easier to target them for their Super-Skrull agenda. It is also a possibility that the Skrulls prefer Sam's Captain America to lead the new Avengers because they perceive it as a weaker team.
