Highlights
In Yet Another Zombie Survivors, players must carefully choose their team of three survivors to face the zombie hordes, each with unique features and abilities.
The Huntress, despite her impressive damage abilities, lacks strong defensive options. The Ghost is exceptional at inflicting heavy damage in close quarters, while the Tank starts off slow but evolves into a formidable late-game character with exceptional defensive capabilities and weapon upgrades. The SWAT is a versatile character who excels in all areas, with high damage output and range. The Medic, on the other hand, may have low damage but proves to be a valuable support character with abilities for self-healing and life stealing. Lastly, the Engineer is a powerful offensive character with impressive defensive skills, making her an invaluable asset to any team.
In Yet Another Zombie Survivors, the choice of characters to team up with against the relentless zombie hordes is crucial. With a maximum recruitment limit of three out of the six survivors, players must carefully select their leader, who is guaranteed, unless they only have the starter survivors or choose to reroll until they get their preferred group. Luckily, each character possesses unique qualities that serve as valuable information for players' decision-making.
While Yet Another Zombie Survivors is still in early access, an additional three characters are anticipated to be included. Despite this, the current roster of six provides ample diversity to enhance gameplay. Three characters are initially available, while the remaining trio can be unlocked through gameplay progression.
6 Huntress
The Huntress is typically the first character that players unlock after playing with the initial three, as she can be obtained by surviving for fifteen minutes. With her bow proficiency and resemblance to Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, she has all the qualities of a badass zombie survivor. However, her gameplay can sometimes be underwhelming. Her primary strength lies in her ability to deal high damage. Players can quickly build up their upgrades by choosing the Huntress as their leader, and her Explosive Arrows upgrade packs a serious punch.
Unfortunately, despite these advantages, her abilities do not provide significant benefits. Additionally, her only defensive option greatly reduces her damage output. Her Arrow Rain ability may seem visually impressive, but it often targets a single zombie or even empty space. Eagle Eye offers some decent buffs to critical hit chance and damage, but her only defensive upgrade, the Freezing Arrows, falls short in crowd control and lacks damage output.
5 Ghost
Ghost, a character unlocked by playing, can be obtained by defeating one hundred zombie bosses. Resembling a character straight out of Cyberpunk, Ghost takes on the role of a cyber ninja armed with a katana and shurikens. Similar to the Huntress, Ghost's incredible damage output is somewhat limited by his close-range effectiveness and limited defensive capabilities, providing only a slightly increased chance to dodge.
One of Ghost's abilities, Shuriken, enables him to unleash a spray of throwing stars. Additionally, his Protocol: Critical ability enhances critical chance and damage. While this ability shares some similarities with the Huntress's Eagle Eye, Ghost's increase is temporary yet substantial, occurring at various intervals. Although both abilities contribute to the gameplay experience, players may find that other abilities have a greater impact. Nonetheless, if players are in search of a potent damage dealer within a short range, Ghost proves to be an excellent choice as a recruit.
4 Tank
Tank, one of the three core characters, is characterized as a slow starter but a formidable force in the late game, a statement that holds true. As the squad leader, it may require some time for players to fully harness the potential of his shotgun. Nonetheless, Tank truly excels in defense, lending a helping hand in prolonging a player's survival on the battlefield. Additionally, during the later stages of gameplay, Tank compensates for his initial lack of firepower with the option to acquire a rocket launcher or a minigun.
Moreover, Tank possesses dynamic abilities. Among them is the Sawblade Drone, which not only follows the squad but can also be upgraded to include more drones. Particularly effective in the early stages, the Sawblade Drone efficiently clears space around the team. Although less predictable, the Minefield ability is also valuable in creating a breathing room for the squad.
3 SWAT
From the beginning of the game, players have access to SWAT, a versatile character that excels in various areas. As a first character, SWAT's damage output is only surpassed by Ghost, but compensates for this with an array of long-range and defensive abilities.
SWAT's abilities are both captivating and highly effective. The Helicopter Strike ability is particularly entertaining as it unleashes an airstrike in a linear fashion across the map. While its outcome can be unpredictable, sometimes saving lives and other times barely grazing a few zombies, it is always beneficial to gather the experience dropped by the zombies it takes down. Additionally, the Grenade Trail ability is useful for creating space and allowing players more freedom to maneuver.
2 Medic
The Medic character is difficult to rank due to her low damage output. However, her value lies in her supportive abilities, making her an invaluable asset to any team. In challenging levels where players are likely to take significant damage, Medic's self-healing ability, Ph.D., and her lifesteal ability, Transplantology, prove to be a lifesaver.
While her limited damage is a notable drawback, it is not the major hindrance that prevents Medic from being the top character in Yet Another Zombie Survivors. In fact, her Antidote Flasks can rival and perhaps even surpass Huntress's Freezing Arrows. Additionally, if players fully upgrade Medic's initial pistol, it can be a decent weapon. When paired with high-damage characters, Medic becomes a formidable combination. Unlocking Medic requires players to collect one hundred health packs. As a medic is essential in a zombie apocalypse, the presence of Medic in Yet Another Zombie Survivors is no exception.
1 Engineer
Engineer, despite not being a fighter prior to the apocalypse, is an invaluable asset to any team. Unlike SWAT, who is a well-rounded offensive character, Engineer excels in both offense and defense. With the Tesla upgrade to her weapon, she can dish out significant damage per second. Additionally, her Electric Turret is highly effective in dealing damage and creating space.
The Electrocution ability is a game-changer in dire situations. When surrounded by hordes of zombies, Engineer's electric pulse can swiftly clear a path, providing much-needed relief. With her ability to deal moderate to high damage and effectively control crowds, Engineer is an indispensable member of any zombie survival team. What's even better is that players have access to her from the start of the game, requiring no additional effort.
Yet Another Zombie Survivorsis available to play on Steam in early access.
