In The Last Kingdom, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the protagonist, experiences six romantic relationships throughout the series. The Last Kingdom, which concluded after five successful seasons on Netflix, also includes a final movie titled The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, serving as the conclusion to the story. Throughout the show's timeline, Uhtred encounters a multitude of individuals who enter and exit his life, with some of them becoming his lovers.
Despite marrying only twice in The Last Kingdom, Uhtred forms romantic connections with a total of six characters from the show. Tragically, Uhtred often experiences the loss of those he loves, particularly the women, who meet their demise sooner or later. Nevertheless, Uhtred manages to find genuine happiness with at least two of these women. Evaluating their interactions with Uhtred, their personalities, and their status within the world of The Last Kingdom, we can compare and contrast each of Uhtred's romantic interests.
6 Skade
Skade, one of Uhtred's love interests, proves to be the most troublesome among them. Their first encounter takes place in a notable episode of The Last Kingdom season 3, where Skade serves as a seer to the Viking warrior Bloodhair. While Brida doubts Skade's claim of being a prophet, many men are convinced of her genuine power. This belief gains credibility when the curse she directs at Uhtred coincides with a series of unfortunate events, including the death of his wife, Gisela. Uhtred himself begins to believe in the curse and decides to take Skade captive in hopes of finding a way to break it.
However, a peculiar infatuation develops between Uhtred and Skade during her captivity. Their relationship is built upon a shared fascination with power. Skade sees Uhtred as a means to elevate herself in the world due to his combat skills and influence, while Uhtred becomes enamored with the power she possesses. He recognizes that she could aid him in his ambitions, but he also becomes aware of her greed and cruelty. Ultimately, Uhtred drowns Skade in order to break the curse she placed upon him, thereby putting an end to any romantic potential between them.
5 Mildrith
Mildrith, Uhtred's first wife, gave birth to their son who unfortunately passed away during infancy. Initially arranged by Alfred in The Last Kingdom season 1, their marriage faced challenges but eventually grew into a genuine affection for one another. However, following the loss of their child and Uhtred's rejection, Mildrith chose to abandon their marriage and seek solace in a convent, immersing herself in her religious beliefs. While Uhtred and Mildrith did find some happiness together for a period of time, their differing religious views made a long-term compatibility unlikely. Despite this, their relationship was considerably healthier compared to Uhtred's time with Skade. Uhtred and Mildrith shared a true affection, even if they were never deeply in love. In the context of medieval arranged marriages, they were fortunate to have moments of happiness together. Nevertheless, it becomes evident that Mildrith was never the love of Uhtred's life when he returns home with another woman, Iseult.
4 Iseult
Uhtred and Iseult cross paths during a raid in Cornwalum, where she holds the title of a petty queen but is also known for her prophetic abilities. Uhtred decides to take Iseult along with him as he departs from those lands, promptly ending his relationship with Mildrith. Together, they make their way to Winchester, only to be forced to seek refuge in the marshes after the city falls to Guthrum. As they navigate their journeys together, their bond deepens, culminating in a moment of intimacy after escaping the marshes. Despite Iseult's fear of losing her prophetic powers upon losing her virginity, their connection is undeniable.
Uhtred and Iseult share a strong chemistry, and she willingly follows him in any path they choose, distinguishing her from both Skade and Mildrith. Unfortunately, their time together is cut short when Skorpa kills Iseult during the climax of The Last Kingdom season 1. If fate had allowed them more time, they could have formed a formidable partnership, but sadly, their chance to build a future together is tragically cut short.
3 Brida
Uhtred's first love in The Last Kingdom is Brida. They grew up together under the care of Earl Ragnar the Fearless and their relationship began the night Ragnar was killed by Kjartan. Fleeing together, they eventually find refuge in Wessex under the protection of Alfred. Uhtred and Brida share a deep and genuine love that surpasses any other relationships Uhtred has had. However, their paths diverge when Uhtred agrees to fight for Alfred while Brida chooses to return to Young Ragnar and live among the Danes.
Despite their differences and the actions Brida takes in The Last Kingdom, Uhtred never stops loving her. By the end of season 4, Brida becomes vengeful and cruel, launching a crusade against Christianity in season 5. She transforms into a villain, even castrating Uhtred's son, Young Uhtred. Eventually, she meets her demise at the hands of Uhtred's daughter, Stiorra. Yet, even in the face of all the harm she has caused, Uhtred still cannot bring himself to hate her. In another life, one without the cruelty and hardships they endured, there might have been a chance for Uhtred and Brida to have a long and happy life together. However, fate had other plans.
2 Aethelflaed
Uhtred and Aethelflaed's love in The Last Kingdom is undeniable. They share a similar moral code and a deep compassion for their people. Both individuals possess strength, bravery, and care for one another, fostering a mutual admiration. However, their differing social statuses create obstacles for their relationship. Aethelflaed, being the daughter of a king and eventually becoming the Lady of Mercia, faces societal expectations that may deem Uhtred, despite his noble birth, unsuitable for her.
Nonetheless, it appears that Uhtred and Aethelflaed may have defied these odds and married each other. Unfortunately, Aethelflaed is compelled to take a vow of chastity in order to secure the support of the Mercian Lords for her bid as Lady of Mercia. This moment is heart-wrenching for both of them, yet Uhtred comprehends the reasons behind her decision. Tragically, Aethelflaed succumbs to an illness before the conclusion of The Last Kingdom season 5. Ultimately, despite their genuine love, Uhtred and Aethelflaed's romance is tragically cut short.
1 Gisela
Gisela and Uhtred were deeply in love and were a perfect match for each other. They shared the same religion and culture, and their personalities complemented one another perfectly. Unlike other characters like Brida and Mildreth, their relationship was free from any societal issues or shortcomings. Even after Gisela's untimely death while giving birth to their youngest son, Osbert, she remained constantly on Uhtred's mind. This enduring love is a testament to the fact that Gisela was, without a doubt, the true love of his life in The Last Kingdom.
