Summary
The Changeling is a supernatural being that replaces stolen children. They are stronger than humans but can be beaten by fire or by eliminating the Changeling mother.
Ghosts and poltergeists are distinct kinds of supernatural beings. Ghosts are the lingering spirits of the deceased, whereas poltergeists seek attention and can pose a threat. To get rid of poltergeists, a specific ritual or the act of salting is required.
The Rugaru, on the other hand, is a sorrowful supernatural creature that undergoes a monstrous transformation and develops animal-like instincts upon reaching 30 years of age. Its defeat can be accomplished through the use of fire or enchanted weaponry.
The most powerful supernatural creatures played a significant role in the overall mythology of the Winchester brothers' battle against angels and demons, where Earth and humans were caught in the middle of Heaven and Hell. However, similar to The X-Files, the show reached its peak entertainment value when it focused on the Monster of the Week episodes. Sam and Dean Winchester were hunters, dedicated to fighting various supernatural monsters and demons to protect the innocent and save lives. The core premise revolved around the boys being hunters, and they encountered a wide range of these supernatural creatures, spanning from iconic myths to exceptionally malevolent and formidable original creations.
After 15 seasons, Supernatural concluded with Dean and Sam accomplishing their mission, Jack usurping God's power over Heaven, and numerous powerful supernatural monsters meeting their demise along the way. Nonetheless, in 2022, a new chapter in the Supernatural universe emerged with The Winchesters, a prequel series that delved into the origin story of Dean and Sam's parents and their rise as formidable hunters in their own right. This fresh perspective shed new light on many familiar myths from Supernatural, yet rarely did they surpass the memorability of the most powerful supernatural monsters from the original series.
Changelings
Season 3, Episode 2
The Changeling, a creature of European mythology, is a formidable monster known for its ability to replace stolen children. In its natural form, it takes on a discolored appearance with sunken eyes and a round mouth filled with teeth. Its human-like guise only holds true until it is seen through a reflection. The Changeling mother sustains herself by consuming the stolen infants, while the young Changelings feed on their own kind. Despite the tragedy of the stolen babies, the Changelings are not as powerful as some other supernatural beings. Although they surpass humans in strength, they can be subdued by fire or by vanquishing the Changeling mother. It is worth noting that these creatures have not reappeared since the events of season 3.
Ghosts / Poltergeists
Recurring Since Season 1
When it comes to Supernatural, ghosts and poltergeists can be quite perplexing. Often, they are grouped together, but there exists a distinction between the two. Ghosts are the spirits of the deceased who remain trapped on Earth, unable to ascend to Heaven or descend to Hell. Not all ghosts are malevolent, as some strive to assist humans during times of need. On the other hand, poltergeists pose an immense threat. Unlike ghosts, who simply find themselves stranded on Earth and often yearn for release, poltergeists crave attention and will go to extreme lengths to attain it. In essence, poltergeists are former ghosts who have transformed into formidable beings. Only a specific ritual or the act of salting can eradicate them.Crocotta

A Crocotta is a supernatural creature known for its dangerous mimicry of human voices. It possesses the ability to imitate the voices of loved ones, leading unsuspecting victims into its cunningly prepared traps. Its origins trace back to Indian mythology, where it was depicted as an animal-like being capable of replicating human speech before attacking and devouring its prey. In a captivating twist, these Supernatural monsters have adapted to modern technology, now employing telephones and computers as convenient tools for luring their victims. The Rugaru's insatiable appetite knows no bounds, leading them to devour anything in their path, even former loved ones, as they lack the ability to control their impulses. Irrespective of an individual's goodness or virtue, no Rugaru has been able to evade their fateful metamorphosis on their 30th birthday, succumbing to the curse placed upon them. Nonetheless, they possess the ability to shape-shift and can take on the appearance of their victim's deepest desires, enticing them to forsake their loved ones. To defeat a Siren, a Bronze Dagger coated in the blood of their prey is necessary.
Soul Eaters

, are ancient supernatural beings residing in a separate dimension. Their sustenance comes from devouring human souls, which they extract from the physical realm and imprison within their nests. This imprisonment is eternal, persisting even after the demise of the souls' physical bodies. A longstanding misconception among hunters was that Soul Eaters were indestructible. Yet, the British Men of Letters discovered that the introduction of a Celtic Sigil into the nest could disintegrate the Soul Eater, liberating the imprisoned souls.Wendigo
Season 1, Episode 2
One of the earliest Supernatural monsters introduced in the series is the Wendigo. The Wendigo, originating from Algonquian mythology, is a cannibalistic creature capable of possessing humans. Possessing super speed and immortality, they prove to be formidable foes. Eliminating a Wendigo is a challenging task, as they are incredibly fast, intelligent, and adept at avoiding heat. However, the key to ending their existence lies in the use of fire. Additionally, Anasazi symbols offer protection from becoming prey and serve as a means to keep them at bay.
The Scarecrow
Season 1, Episode 11
In season 1 of the show, there was an episode called "The Scarecrow" featuring a supernatural creature known as the Scarecrow. This menacing scarecrow would lurk in a field and entice unsuspecting victims off the road. The Scarecrow proved to be invincible, as even Dean's gun had no effect on it. Surprisingly, it was later revealed that the Scarecrow was actually a representation of the Norse God Vanir. The local community sacrificed strangers to the Scarecrow in order to maintain their "blessed" status. The only way to defeat this monster was to burn the sacred tree that granted it power.

Season 2, Episode 2
For those who have a fear of clowns, the Rakshasa can be downright terrifying. These ancient Hindu beings have a peculiar feeding pattern, consuming their prey only once every 20 to 30 years. In addition to their frightening appearance, they bear a resemblance to Stephen King's iconic character, Pennywise, from his novel "It". Rakshasas are known for devouring human flesh, choosing to rest upon deceased insects, and possessing the ability to transform into various forms, often taking on the guise of clowns. Their physical capabilities are extraordinary, boasting superhuman strength and speed, and even the power of invisibility. While they are invisible, their shadows reveal their menacing presence. Primarily serving as weapons for formidable demons, the Daeva possess the ability to teleport, showcasing incredible strength and possessing razor-sharp claws. Although they are impervious to death as demons, they are repelled by light and can be controlled through the use of dark magic.
Shtriga
Season 1, Episode 18
The Shtriga originates from an ancient Albanian myth that dates back to the time of Ancient Rome. These beings bear resemblance to witches; however, instead of practicing magic, Shtriga sustain themselves on a person's Spiritus vitae, or life force. Once an individual's life force is depleted, their immune system weakens. In the Supernatural realm, Shtriga primarily target children, drawing nourishment from their life force. Sam once claimed that conventional and divine weapons are powerless against the Shtriga, but this statement is not entirely accurate. When caught in the act of feeding, Shtriga become vulnerable to consecrated iron. Though it may not lead to their ultimate demise, it will cause them to promptly retreat.
Witches
Recurring Since Season 1
The witches featured on Supernatural share similarities with witches depicted in other horror TV shows, movies, and books. They possess the ability to cast spells by tapping into supernatural forces and have the capability to communicate with spirits. According to Sam's remark in "Malleus Maleficarum," their unpredictability lies in the fact that they could be anyone, rendering it impossible to discern who is or isn't a witch. The strength of a witch is determined by both their source of magic and their level of knowledge and training. Rowena serves as an excellent example of an exceptionally formidable witch, beloved by Supernatural fans. The primary vulnerability of most witches on Supernatural, however, is their susceptibility to iron.
Ghouls
Season 4, Episode 19
Ghouls, classified as Alpha-level supernatural creatures, possess a rather macabre diet, as they primarily feed on the deceased's flesh. Interestingly, they possess a peculiar ability to assume the appearance of their prey and actively pursue their next target. It is worth noting that ghouls have been known to indulge in feeding on the living as well, remarkably transforming into their victims even if the intended prey is still alive. Additionally, they retain the ability to revert back to their original form if desired. Beyond their extraordinary mimicry, ghouls boast exceptional speed, strength, agility, and heightened senses surpassing that of ordinary humans. Despite their formidable nature, ghouls are not impervious, although they can only be defeated by decapitation or inflicting severe brain damage. It is speculated that ghouls may bear resemblance to Djinn, a powerful supernatural entity, although they pale in comparison in terms of their innate abilities.
Arachne
Season 6, Episode 13
Arachnes, true to their name, are Supernatural creatures with a spider-like nature, disguising themselves as humans. These beings possess the ability to fashion resilient webs, much like actual spiders, which they employ to ensnare unsuspecting prey. Moreover, Arachnes possess a venomous bite capable of swiftly claiming a human life. In a peculiar parallel to Spider-Man, they exhibit spider-like capabilities such as enhanced strength, agility, speed, and heightened senses. While vulnerable to conventional weapons and fire, beheading serves as the definitive method to vanquish these creatures.
Werewolves
First Appearance, Season 2, Episode 27
In the world of Supernatural, werewolves live up to the expectations of horror fiction enthusiasts. They share a bloodline with skinwalkers and possess the ability to shift into a fearsome human-wolf hybrid. Satisfying their carnivorous nature, many of these creatures devour unsuspecting humans as their prey. Notably, the legends hold true as a single werewolf bite can transform a human into a werewolf. However, in the realm of Supernatural, werewolves also have the ability to procreate and give birth to werewolf offspring. Among them, the purebloods stand as the most formidable, as they approach the Alpha level. Possessing full control over their transformations, purebloods master the art of taming their animalistic instincts far better than regular werewolves. When it comes to defeating a werewolf, only two methods prove effective: the use of silver and the act of decapitation.
Djinn
First Appearance, Season 2, Episode 20
A Djinn, often mistaken as a genie, is a treacherous creature that employs deceit and trickery to achieve its objectives. Unlike the conventional legends, Supernatural portrays Djinn as monstrous beings instead of supernatural entities. In the series, Djinn possess the ability to induce a state where individuals relive their deepest dreams and desires upon physical contact. This process renders the human in a comatose condition, thereby enabling the Djinn to feed on them. According to lore, hunters are believed to eliminate Djinn by using a silver knife dipped in lamb's blood, although Sam managed to subdue one by striking its head with a golf club.
Jefferson Starships
Season 6, Episode 19
This particular entity, affectionately named "Jefferson Starships" by the music enthusiast Dean Winchester, deviates from conventional mythological narratives. Originating from Eve's experimentation, these hybrid Supernatural creatures embody the epitome of monstrosity. Possessing an amalgamation of traits from various creations, such as vampiric teeth, wraith-like spikes, and shape-shifting abilities, they are deemed formidable by their creator. While severing their heads temporarily impeded their movements, it ultimately took the intervention of Crowley's demonic forces to fully eradicate them.
Hellhounds
First Appearance, Season 2, Episode 8
Hellhounds, described by Sam as demonic pit bulls, are highly dangerous supernatural creatures. Their loyalty lies with demons from Hell and they pose a threat to humans, angels, and even other demons. The primary objective of a Hellhound is to claim the souls of humans once their deals with demons reach maturity. Generally, only those humans involved in such deals are able to perceive these formidable beings. Once a Hellhound catches the scent of its assigned target, it remains persistent for life. The only effective means of subduing a Hellhound are through the use of iron, Angel Blades, The Colt, or Ruby's knife. Salt can act as a barrier, although it will not prevent them from eventually reaching their intended prey.
Vampires
Recurring Since Season 1
Supernatural has gone to great lengths to portray their vampires as formidable adversaries. As a result, they have deviated from the traditional lore that fans of classic monster movies have become accustomed to. In this universe, vampires are unaffected by crosses and sunlight only poses minimal harm to them. Even the tried and true method of using a wooden stake to pierce their hearts proves futile against these supernatural beings. However, similar to their classic counterparts, they are immortal, never age, possess superhuman strength and speed, and are impervious to conventional weaponry. Additionally, they have the ability to retract their fangs, enabling them to seamlessly blend in with humans. For a significant period of time, decapitation was the sole means of eradicating them, until the British Men of Letters devised specialized weapons that rendered their own blood toxic.
Khan Worm
Season 6, Episode 16
The Khan Worm, named by Dean Winchester, is an original Supernatural creature inspired by the appearance and powers of the iconic Star Trek movie The Wrath of Khan. These creatures, created by Eve, have the ability to infiltrate a human's mind and manipulate their actions. The Khan Worm is an exceptionally perilous entity that took control of Dean, resulting in the tragic demise of his cousin Gwen Campbell. It later possessed Bobby Singer, compelling him to eliminate his former partner Rufus Turner. These creatures can be neutralized by electrocuting them while still inside the host's body or by crushing them if they manage to escape.
