This catastrophic event brought upon devastating storms and tidal waves, which left Winterhold permanently crippled. However, the College of Winterhold stood unaffected and continues to thrive as a prestigious institution for the study of magic, being the true highlight of Winterhold.

8 Windhelm

Located in the Northern region of Skyrim, Windhelm is commonly referred to as the City of Kings. This title holds true, as the ruling Jarl, Ulfric Stormcloak, is the very individual responsible for the murder of the High King, igniting a civil war centered around the rightful ownership of the realm and Nord heritage. However, Windhelm's pride has led to a troubling issue, as the city harbors deep-rooted bigotry.

In addition to its frigid climate and constricting city layout, Windhelm is plagued by the presence of a notorious serial killer known as The Butcher. Adding to the distress, the Nords residing in Windhelm confine elves and individuals of other races to a specific area called the Gray Quarter, subjecting them to constant verbal abuse in the hopes of forcing them to leave Windhelm and retreat from Skyrim, a land they believe should solely belong to the Nords.

Primarily functioning as a trading hub, Dawnstar offers a diverse range of commodities including fish, materials for blacksmithing, and even a captivating Daedric Museum for enthusiasts.

6 Morthal

Morthal stands out among the cities in Skyrim, with its distinct location within the marshes of Hjaalmarch. Situated amidst swamp-like surroundings, Morthal presents a stark contrast to the other more appealing cities. Although it provides respite from the freezing temperatures, the swamplands render Morthal less attractive, with a size that more closely resembles an average town than a grand city.

For those intrigued by the Dwemer, Markarth provides an exceptional experience, as it is built upon ancient Dwarven ruins. The city's wealth is attributed to the wealth of silver it possesses. Nevertheless, the journey to Markarth is treacherous, further complicated by an underlying Forsworn conspiracy. Despite these challenges, the bustling city showcases a multitude of shops, inns, and captivating inhabitants.

4 Falkreath

Falkreath, located in the southwestern region of Skyrim, stands out as one of the few places with a warmer climate. This vibrant town is nestled within a lush forest, offering visitors a pleasant and inviting atmosphere. Notably, there is a sacred shrine dedicated to the Daedric Prince, Clavicus Vile, called Haemar's Shame, situated nearby. 2 Riften

Located in the southeastern region of Skyrim, Riften sprawls over a vast lake, supported by wooden structures and piers. Located at the very center of Skyrim, the city of Whiterun serves as the initial destination for many adventurers upon their escape from Helgen. This choice is justified by its reputation as a peaceful and impartial place. Whiterun remains open to both Stormcloaks and Imperials, though only in terms of their beliefs rather than their conflicts. The residents of Whiterun value hard work and simplicity, which contribute to the creation of a strong and close-knit community, even in the midst of the civil war that has driven ancient clans apart.

Functioning as the heart of Skyrim, Whiterun boasts robust defenses constructed from wood and stone, effectively shielding it from both warfare and dragon attacks.
