Summary
Greendale Community College always went all out for Halloween, and the Community Halloween episodes are a prime example of the show's holiday-themed brilliance.
"Paranormal Parentage" may not be the top choice, but it successfully delivers humorous and thrilling scenes as the study group embarks on an adventure in a parody of Scooby-Doo while exploring a haunted mansion.
Among the impressive lineup of Halloween episodes in Community, "Epidemiology" shines with its innovative approach, seamlessly combining different genres and highlighting the strong bond among the group members as they navigate a zombie outbreak that spreads throughout the entire campus.
Greendale Community College really knew how to embrace the spooky season, and we've ranked all of their Halloween episodes right here. The main characters, Jeff, Annie, Shirley, Pierce, Troy, Abed, and Britta, always took advantage of the campus Halloween parties, and luckily for them, their fellow students took the holiday seriously. When they weren't in class, the study group always managed to find something to do on campus, and almost every season (except for two) featured a Halloween episode packed with pop-culture references and meta moments.
Dean Pelton, known for his love of bringing the community together, regularly planned events at the college. With his flair for extravagant costumes, it's no wonder Halloween became a big deal at Greendale. While the study group usually had their eyes set on the Halloween party, they also found their own unique ways to celebrate the day. The events may not have gone exactly as planned, but they were certainly unforgettable. Community was known for its exceptional holiday episodes, and the Halloween ones were a shining example of that.
Season 4, Episode 2, "Paranormal Parentage"
In the final episode of Community's Halloween special, all the members of the study group except Pierce receive an invitation to Vicki's costume party. However, their plans take a turn when they are compelled to go to Pierce's mansion after he accidentally locks himself in the panic room. The episode pays homage to Scooby-Doo, with the characters exploring the mansion and encountering eerie and supernatural events. Eventually, they discover that Pierce is responsible for most of the spooky occurrences, but there is still another mysterious figure lurking in the house.
Despite facing criticism for the absence of Community creator Dan Harmon and a noticeable change in tone during the fourth season, the episode still has its positive aspects. The group dynamic shines as the characters navigate the haunted house scenario, resulting in a blend of comedy and surprisingly suspenseful moments. Additionally, Abed's subplot of exploring the house alone adds a fun touch of meta-commentary. Although not considered the best Community has to offer, "Paranormal Parentage" is still a satisfactory Halloween-themed episode.
Season 1, Episode 7, "Introduction To Statistics"
The first Halloween episode of the show occurs in the seventh overall episode. It revolves around Annie hosting a Day of the Dead party for extra credit. Meanwhile, Jeff attempts to gain entry into a faculty party in order to impress Professor Slater, his current love interest. Britta tries to convince Jeff to go back to Annie's party, while Troy and Abed, dressed as Eddie Murphy and Batman respectively, deal with Pierce after he becomes high from pills he traded with Starburns.
"Paranormal Parentage" and "Introduction to Statistics" have a significant difference in quality, as the latter can easily be considered one of the best Halloween episodes in the first season of Community. The first Halloween-themed episode, "Introduction to Statistics," establishes a precedent for the quirky holiday-themed episodes that follow. The early stages of the group dynamics create genuine and hilarious moments of comedy. Annie's determination to fit in is beautifully contrasted with Jeff's usual womanizing behavior. However, it is Pierce's unexpected vulnerability and the subsequent rescue mission by the group that truly captures the essence of Community.
Season 3, Episode 5, "Horror Fiction In Seven Spooky Steps"
The season 3 episode of Community titled "Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps" features Britta administering personality tests to the study group. To her surprise, she discovers that one of them could potentially be a homicidal maniac. In an attempt to gauge their reactions, she tells a horror story about an escaped psychopath. This prompts the rest of the group to share their own spooky tales. Abed's story involves a secluded cabin, Annie envisions herself as a schoolteacher in love with a vampire portrayed by Jeff, Troy and Abed are sewn together in a science experiment in Troy's story, and Pierce's story is deemed inappropriate. Shirley takes a different approach by focusing on the concept of the Rapture.
This episode, "Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps," showcases the brilliance of comedy through its horror vignettes. It expertly parodies common horror themes while delving deep into the minds of the storytellers. Abed's logical and predictable plot, Shirley's moral tale with a religious basis, and Troy's wacky Frankenstein-inspired adventure not only provide laughter but also offer valuable insights into the core identities of these characters. With its clever fusion of humor, meta-commentary, and moments of genuine suspense, "Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps" exemplifies the innovative essence of Community and its ability to reimagine traditional television norms.
Season 2, Episode 6, "Epidemiology"
In the episode "Epidemiology," the study group attends Greendale's annual Halloween party, organized by Dean Pelton. However, things take a sinister turn when the food purchased for the event turns out to be a dangerous substance instead of taco meat. As a result, partygoers become ill and display zombie-like behavior, causing the Army to lock down the campus. Trapped with the infected, Jeff and the rest of the study group must find a way to escape, making this one of Community's most creative Halloween episodes.
"Epidemiology" showcases the perfect blend of genres, taking the familiar concept of a zombie apocalypse and infusing it with Community's clever humor and heartfelt moments. The episode expertly plays with horror tropes, allowing each character to shine in their own unique way - whether it's Troy's heroic transformation or Abed's keen self-awareness. The setting of Greendale transformed into a zombified playground is both surreal and hauntingly atmospheric, heightened by the unexpected disco soundtrack. Beyond the laughs and scares, this Community Halloween episode serves as a testament to the group's camaraderie and unwavering loyalty towards one another, providing a mix of laughter, excitement, and genuine emotion.
